Have the political parties always been referred to as a brand?
i keep hearing the term "republican brand" being used. i dont think i have heard this until very recently.

has this been a customary use of the word? is this new?

1. I've been using the term "brand recognition" in this regards for a few years.
I actually thought I had coined the terminology in this regards, but that isn't the case. It just seemed to me that folks that will get behind their "team" or party or marque regardless of how wrong or stupid it is falls into this line of thinking, that is, that whatever "my team" does is okay or right or represents me and I'll stand behind it.

4. i think brand loyalty and recognitiion do work in politics but have never heard the MSM
use it before. i wonder if its their new catch phrase

I live in the very heart of politics (DC) and I really don't recall hearing that term.

7. The Republican's brought it to prominence recently
There's always been talk of branding in politics but the Republicans are using it now to deflect attention from the disastrous effects of their rule, as though their ideology is still sound but unfortunately the wonderfulness of their message is still not getting through. The media eats this stuff up because they see it as a recognition of the power of their influence.
