1. Yes indeed.
The secret is to add the sugar when the tea is hot and steeping. Um, Um, Good.

22. Are you telling me I could make this shit at home? Do I add the sugar
when the tea is boiling? ( I do it the old fashioned way...on the stove with two quarts of water and about 8 tea bags ) That would make sense....it's actually cooking into it.

52. Here's how I do it...
Quart pan on the stove, filled with water. Empty gallon milk jug at the sink. When water's to a boil, kill the heat and put in 6-8 tea bags. Let steep 4-7 minutes (depending on how strong you like it.) Meanwhile, pour 1 1/2 cups sugar in the bottom of the milk jug. When the stuff on the stove's ready, pour it in the jug over the sugar, shake well to dissolve, then add cold water to make the gallon and off it goes to the fridge.

Of course, play around with the proportions to get it "just so" for your taste. The secret IS mixing the sugar while the tea is very hot...the tea will hold more sugar in suspension mixed that way than cold.

Up here in NEPA (transplant from Nashville and I live on sweet tea in the summer), they don't have it the way I like it, but Turkey Hill stores do have something these Yankees call "Lemonade Tea" which is pretty damn close to sweet tea with a lot of lemon...the way I prefer it. The stuff they bottle and label as "sweet tea" contains very little sugar.

43. Columbia SC. I ordered Iced Tea and I could not drink it.
Richardo describes it as "...brown sugar water..."

YES! That exactly describes how that tea tasted to me! I swear it must have had about a pound of sugar in that glass along with a half cup of tea. I asked the waitress for a glass of water instead. She asked if there was a problem with the tea and I had to explain that it had "sugar" in it. She laughed at me and said she'd be happy to make up some UNsweet tea. Gawd, I felt like an asshat.

I drink a lot of tea but I never put any kind of sweetener in it. I grew up in a family that used to put sugar in tea (and on everything else for that matter) and once I learned to drink tea without sugar I just can't DEAL with it any more.

:puke:

I adore most southern foods but I have to admit that I really AM a Yankee when it comes to tea.

Man, that stuff is good.

We were at a "Cajun" restaurant in the Los Angeles area and I had ordered a beer. The waitress then mentioned that they had sweet tea. I said, "Cancel that beer. I would love some sweet tea!"

I gave up beer for sweet tea...how effed up is that?

15. actually, you were right on target there.
that sweet tea is the greatest, made correctly that is.
My granny made tea so black and strong it looked like coffee, plenty sweet with lots of lemon. She never ever used tea bags either. Loose tea strained through this ancient tea strainer.

I have sacrificed my sweet tea on the altar of weight loss but it really is good stuff.

90. exactly. Tea w/o sugar has no calories, and does have potassium which
we all need.

Southern Sweet Tea is plenty sugary and you can drink a lot more of it because it isn't carbonated, so it is basically empty calories. To be applied in moderation ...it is a easy thing for me to take out of my food plan since I like it both ways.

if you don't know what that is ( and lots of people don't ) but she had these huge-ass jars of water with tea bags that she would let sit out in the part of the house that had the strongest amount of sunlight...no sugar or anything, and serve it just like that. It was good...especially in the summertime

on 3x11 and 11x7):

Make up a good pot of black tea - loose tea leaves of course. I make it Irish style - it looks like coffee it's so strong.

Fill a quart bottle with ice cubes, throw in a couple tablespoons of lemon juice ans sprinkle some sugar over the ice cubes.

Pour the hot tea over the ice cubes and fill the bottle to the top.

The temperature came out just right and I'd take a couple of sips whnever I needed to cool down a little. Heaven!

And what better than red beans (also known as pinto beans) seasoned with salt pork with chow-chow on top, fried potatoes and onions (cooked in the same skillet), and hot buttered cornbread.
Oh man!:9

68. I like my ice tea not to sweet.
If it is to sweet I can't taste the tea.

I mix 3 different brands of tea bags for a really good glass of ice tea.

I do like my ice tea.

We had a bbq today I couldn't make enough.

My ice tea maker was really busy.

76. It's my personal favorite for basic brewed tea
I use it for hot tea, iced tea, and sweet tea (a rare treat as I'm trying to lose weight and can do without the calories).

Ruins the flavor of decent tea.

80. Thank you. No civilized human being puts sugar in tea.
That's why they sell it at McDonald's.

82. You eat that stuff for DINNER?
I can maybe handle two little sausage links now and then for breakfast, but geesh!

Why is it a big thing here and not up in Northern Va?

The origins of regional preferences is fascinating to me.
Is it because there are so many hog farms here?

85. Grew up on it.
We drink it year round in the South. Didn't know that the rest of the world doesn't drink iced sweetened tea in the winter. Except that our winters are almost nonexistent!

I remember hearing on the TV when I was a kid that "children should not drink coffee or tea" and thinking "Whaaat????". We drank iced tea at every meal and thought nothing of it.
