The WEIRDEST thing happened today
Edited on Thu May-15-08 07:20 PM by GreenPartyVoter
I was out walking "laps" up and down the road of our trailer park and I kept hearing this very loud bird. At first I thought it was a crow call I had never heard before. Then I thought it might be a rooster or goose. That was when it walked out from between two trailers...

A peacock. A PEACOCK! In freakin' Maine! The kids and I went to get a closer look at him, but he took off and crossed the main road. Fortunately he didn't get hit but you should have seen the face of the lady who had to stop for him. She pulled up alongside us and said, "Was that a peacock?!" LOL

Some of you may remember Mr. and Mrs. Cluck, the chickens who took over the trailer park for a week a few years ago. They had been dumped in the nearby nature area. The kids and I ran down to the neighbor's who owns some chickens herself,(just like we did last time we had odd birds in the trailer park) but no she was not missing a large male peacock.

Anyway, I called the town office and asked if anyone had reported him missing and would they let our animal guy know? Thing is, I am not sure if anyone came to look for him. If a car doesn't get him a coyote probably will. :( I always hate this sort of thing. I see an animal wandering around and I just spend the rest of the day agonizing over whether or not it will be ok.

This has to be someone's rather expensive pet. I hope they are out looking for him and find him!

1. Hopefully someone's out looking for him
the good part is, he shouldn't be too hard to spot from a distance :P

My sister has a neighbor that has some exotic birds for pets, including peacocks and peahens...They do make weird noises.
Careful though, peacocks can be MEAN.....

didn't want to get too close to this guy. I just wish he had run back into the trailer park instead of out into the road. :(

8. No females around to impress.
I laugh my ass off every time I see one strutting around in front of some lady peafowl. "Look at my feathers girls, I am soooo pretty."

7. Don't worry about coyotes getting him (They can fly).
They usually spend their evenings up in a tree. They can't fly like your average bird but more like Turkey's who can do it for short distances. They are beautiful birds, a guy down the road has numerous peacocks. I love it when I drive by & see the males trying to impress the ladies!

again a few minutes ago so he did make it through the night. :)

9. They are very pretty but they poop a lot which is messy if they take up residence in your yard
or on your porch. I had a neighbor's peacocks start hanging out on my patio and my car! What a mess!

12. Yeah, when those chickens wandered into our yard the place was a disaster. I was not
sorry to see them go. I will try taking some birdseed down to our new feathered friend. But I will feed him there and not up at the house. LOL

13. They're really not very expensive. You can order them from most hatcheries.
I'd love to have one if I ever live on a big enough piece of land.

around all alone out there. I was really surprised how cheap they are!

They will never allow anything out of the ordinary approach without calling out a warning.

17. UPDATE: I heard that someone on another road in town has pet peacocks so
hopefully they'll come and try and collect Mr. Peacock. I just found out that there is a bobcat in the area too, so he might want to go home.

I hear it in films a lot, even though they don't show the birds.

31. That's it!
There was one walking about near my work a year or so back, and I thought it was a woman calling for help. I went outside and he was standing there.

They are just stunning birds.

21. I wouldn't worry
A neighbour of my parents has peacocks in Michigan (in the woods, where there are coyotes and things), and they just wander around. The come into my parents yard every few days in the summer. They're neat.

23. Peacocks have a NASTY peck, from what I've heard.
I doubt it's got much to worry about, so long as it doesn't run across a bear.

25. I've seen a couple roaming our neighborhood. An amazing site.
Sometimes they damage cars because they peck at their own reflections. Not the brightest birds, I guess.

26. NEW UPDATE: I got within 2 feet of him by
shaking a cup of birdseed and calling, "chick, chick, chick, chick"

I was a bit nervous about it, especially when he "yelled" right next to me! LOL He made a new sound tonight, like a goose honk right before his caw.

On I-94 between Chicago and Milwaukee.

Sadly, I only saw him for a split second... then a poof of beautiful feathers. :(

34. One time a peacock displayed with his feathers lying on top of my leg
I was at a zoo where they let the peacocks walk freely on the property. I was sitting on a picnic bench at the snack bar and one of the peacocks started displaying, probably trying to impress someone into sharing their food with him. He was standing right next to me and when he displayed, he was close enough to me that his feathers rested on my leg. It was so cool! All of the people in the area were remarking about him and smiling at me.
