Do you now, or have you ever owned a lava lamp?

I was doing a bit of spring cleaning today and on a lark I plugged in my old lava lamp that I bought when I was about 12 or 13 years old. For the longest time it was functioning as a hat rack, but I figured what the hell and turned it on...it still worked!!! Now I can't stop staring at those little red blobs. Almost makes me wonder why I hadn't used the thing in 10 years

It's way groovy maaaaaan! :hippie:

1. Oh, heck, yes!
Got one as a wedding gift in 1974. Actually, we loved it; I think my ex still has it. I'd like to get another one.

4. I did have one when I was a kid,
I bought one at a yard sell a few years ago, still works.

The cats love to watch the lamp so I have to keep it save from them.

6. that's my problem
I love them, but when I have a cat, I'd rather not have a burning hot object that can be knocked over

9. The cats will just stare at the lamp, it is funny to watch.
I keep it up high, and unpluged when I am not home.

11. Had one in my apartment in college in 1974 and left it for
my room mates. Then I received one as a birthday present when I turned 50 six years ago :hippie:

It brings back good memories whenever I have it on.

12. Yep, green on green
A latter-day hippie dippy friend of mine (raised by two genuine hippie dippy parents) gave it to us as a wedding present--along with a Magic 8 Ball. Two of my favorite presents!

I have it on a very high shelf (also because of cats) and don't plug it in as often as I should. Maybe I'll go plug it in now! :D

15. You bet I have one!
Every now and then, when I'm in the mood, I'll plug it in and just relax as I watch those red globs of wax float and bob in that yellow oil.

It can really mellow you out, you know... :hippie:

16. I had one, a long time ago...
From the time I was about, I dunno, 10? Until I was 17 and went to college and left it with my brother, and it died while he had it... :(

May add that to the list of things for next year...

24. Yes, I have one - red wax, yellow oil
It's not really a lava lamp, it's a knock-off that my brother won at Casino Pier, Seaside Heights, NJ for me. He won one for his daughter and I whined that he never won anything for me. One dollar later and I had my lava lamp!

I like when the wax erupts into weird patterns and freezes as it shoots up into the cooler oil at the top. I turn it off and just look at the wild patterns.

It's pretty cool. It takes about an hour for it to start "blobbing" though.

...the glass shattered and for a split second the liquid retained its shape. COOL.

26. Yes, I just bought one for the recording studio.
It was manufactured in, get this, CHINA! It's doesn't work very well. All of the blobs coagulate at the top, and there seems to be air trapped in the blob material making it buoyant. I'm disappointed with this lamp, but hey, it was only $19 at Spencer's Gifts. Anyone no where I can get a higher quality one?

and used to turn it on once in a while. I don't think I've done it since the kidlet arrived because she hasn't asked to see it. Maybe this weekend I'll turn it on and she can watch it.

31. I have owned 3 over the years
My first one I got from my grandmother when I was about 12. It was from the early 70's. My next one I got was when I went to college in 1979. It met an untimely end by a clumsy drummer from a band I was in. It served as a stage prop. So did he most of the time... The band bought me a new one, but they have changed.

The lava used to be orange, now it's all kinds of colors. Also, the liquid was more amber before. I have the lamp right next to me right now at work. I get some crap for that, but a lot of my bosses are baby-boomers, so the kidding is probably from envy.
