Man uses gun to scratch back; shoots himself

A Fort Worth man trying to scratch an itch on his back used a revolver and accidentally shot himself.

Jorge Espinal, 44, was drinking beer and playing poker around 3 a.m. Sunday morning in his home in the 3500 block of Montague Street, when he got up from the table and walked into another room, said Fort Worth police Lt. Kenneth Dean.

“He told officers he had an itch on his back and grabbed the first thing he could get a hold of, which was a revolver,” Lt. Dean said. “The gun went off."

He must have had it cocked for some reason cause double-action trigger pull is usually considerable. Guns don't just "go off" by themselves.

I was once four wheeling and came across some kids, one of whom had managed to shoot himself with a SA .22 revolver. Being SA, he had to cock it before each shot. apparantly he had decided not to shoot something and didn't decock. So he was walking around with a cocked pistol in his hand and shot himself in the leg. We drove him to the hospital where the police were called.

As a side note, revolvers have no manual safeties and are supposed to be in a holster that covers the trigger at all times, even if it is in a drawer or something.
