Cheesy souvenirs — What's the tackiest thing you've received?
An employee just returned from Acapulco and brought this back for me. It wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't serious. It's hard to tell by the photos, but it's a 3-D polyresin.

What do you think I should do with it?

So, what are some of the worst/tackiest souvenirs that you've received?

2. Hang it on the wall. It's folk art. Too bad it doesn't have
any deities with exposed internal organs in flames. Try to get some of those to go with it. Collect.

6. Umm...
Nice thought, but this was the label on the box.

For those of you who may not read Spanish, it was made in China.

3. Lotion from Acapulco... what a coincidence.
Made from dead turtles. It went into the garbage. Egads!

7. Egads is right!
Was it in a turtle-type bottle or jar?

9. A plain plastic jar.
I couldn't even open the stuff, just thanked the giver nicely and then tossed it. <creeping out at the thought of turtle cream>

4. My family competes at this...
to see who can give the tackiest souvenirs. My little brother gave me a souvenir from Florida - its base is pressed sand shaped like a shell. It has a plastic palm tree and alligator in sunglasses sitting on top of it. It's hilarious.

I got my girl best friend a snow globe with pink flamingos in it from florida. I also got her a teeny little pink velvet sombrero on a trip to Mexico.

But the best ever, my mom got my best friend this thing. It's a pink flamingo sitting on a little swing. The whole thing is on a long spring and it bounces up and down. I think you're supposed to hang it in a tree or something but she has it hanging in her kitchen. :-)

5. I have a tradition of exchanging tacky souvenirs
with my best friend. The tackier, the better. But it has to be something useful. Merely ornamental (like that lovely picture) won't do.

I've gotten him a clock shaped like Australia (only $5 U.S! Second best buy ever!), a sugar container with Mount Rushmore printed on it, a California surfer bottle opener, among others. The very best was a set of salt and pepper shakers from the Statue of Liberty, some years back. The nice young lady in the gift shop must have opened 15 packages to find a set that wasn't broken and so badly made as to be worth selling to me. In the end, she gave me a set (the design was so badly printed on it you couldn't really tell what it was supposed to be) for free, refusing to take any money for it. The cost was probably $2.95, considering this was 1980.

Part of the deal is to leave the price tag on, so we'll each know exactly how cheap the other one was.

The real problem in recent years is that the truly tacky stuff seems to have disappeared. Souvenirs are actually worth the money. Although I must say, that picture of the diver tops anything I've ever gotten or given.

10. Isn't burning plastic toxic?

Perhaps that wouldn't be such a good idea.
