[BlueIris]

"White Iris"

Lone soprano descant. Aubade of quiet rain.
The touch as absolute, the breast as white
and transient as this white flower,
this passing guest. Swan-wings unpleating,
poised for flight, the veins a network
of shadow and glass. Hold it to the light:
this petal might dissolve before our eyes.
See, the aqueous cells, how nearly
incorporeal, how silver-grained,
a noumenal photograph, the paradox
of lasting flash, the answer that says no
to all goings even as it presses past.
If we could see atoms or angels, they might
burn bright as this snow-flame rising;
this white hand stretched in petaled pantomime,
spelling the thing which must disintegrate
before it can rhyme. At the luminous core
a well of centrifugal emptiness—
stab of light in the heart's sunless auricle,
the hand to the lips, our purest wish
churned to celestial ash.
