Fuckin' Oprah - I'm watching her "Talented Kids" show, and she sucks.
Of course, Oprah always sucks as anyone who's spent more than 3 seconds watching that bloviated self-serving jerk knows...

She had some kids on the first segment of the show with real amazing talent in classical piano, blues guitar, ballroom dancing, and drumming - they all got about 10 seconds to perform, and did an interview with all four of them together.

Then she pulls out a Whitney-Houston wannabe 8 year old from the Philippines who does, one must admit, have a powerful voice, but it's a total clone of that shitty Houston/Celine/Abdul other kind of overdone cliche garbage pop diva-crap, no genuineness in it, no real artistic value to it (of course it's pop music, so finding something artistic in it is gonna be pretty tough to begin with...) - but this kid gets to sing an entire song (some awful pop song with every fucking diva vocal cliche one can think of, including the triumphant and oh-so-emotional key change up a half step before the final verse) and she got an interview by herself.

Fuck you, Oprah. Fuck you. Fuck you for being one of the willing and main engines of dumbing down America.

Fuck you.

4. I like Ellen! She's funny, AND she has a brain and she's authentic.
She's the anti-Oprah.

7. I was about to defend Oprah, until I read your description of the wannabe singer.
Edited on Tue May-13-08 08:44 AM by PelosiFan
Now I agree with you. Fucking mediocrity gets a global spotlight. Your description is distressingly good, I can almost see and hear her in my mind. Blech.

Though the same thing happens on Ellen, and Leno, and Letterman, and every other venue for unwashed fame. (Edit, I never watch Oprah myself, Ellen is the only talk show host I can stand.)

The dumbing down of America already happened. She's just capitalizing on it. :(

10. "mediocrity gets a global spotlight" - I love that phrase. I'm stealing it.

Look forward in the future to many posts that begin "And yet another global spotlight, consciously aimed at the heavens so as to ensure no chance of it illuminating something of value, suddenly zooms itself to mediocrity..."

8. For a brief period, our local PBS station was showing a program called
"From the Top," featuring musicians under the age of 18. One of the most amazing was a 14-year-old who was not only equally skilled in jazz and classical piano but also directed a gospel choir at his church. His parents said that they realized he had musical talent when they found him at the piano at age 4, trying to play the music he had heard that morning at church.

If kids like that, the real achievers--the young musicians, scientists, writers, organizers of charitable projects, received more media exposure than the young athletes and the glitzy imitators of mediocre pop stars, we'd go a long way toward solving the educational problems in this country.

As it is, talented young people have to worry about getting beaten up at school.

9. Beautifully said! But then, you always speak beautifully and spot on.
You're only *really* an amazing whiz kid if you can throw a ball well or sing in whatever the poppish fad of the moment is.

And not do the talented kids get beaten up at school, they get beaten up with the administration's and society's blessings.

11. Oprah has a tin ear.
Years ago I saw Charlotte Church on her show, when she was about 13 or 14.

Oprah called her "the voice of an angel". I was horrified.

Church was whiny and nasal and just too damn immature to be singing like that.

She should have shut up for a few years and stopped singing to let her voice mature.

Charlotte Church. GAKKKK!!!!

OTOH, a lot of Celine Dion's stuff in French is pretty good. The Titanic song is totally suckwad. Celine Dion has an excellent voice for a pop singer.

Josh Groban is pretty good too.

Nota Bene: I have had 12 years of piano lessons, 10 years of violin lessons, and 2 years of voice lessons learning opera in Italian, German and French. I think I know a good singing voice when I hear one.

12. I agree about Charlotte Church
I saw her on TV once, and I thought, "She's straining."

Perhaps because we have so little music instruction in the schools these days, any young person who can carry a tune is suddenly "the voice of an angel."

14. Never cared very much for okra. I find her so full of herself that it's embarrassing.
She never, ever passes an opportunity to receive public praise.

'bout 5 years ago, she talked about giving some Charity 10,000 dollars and (naturally) the camera panned the audience..
...who was crying and clapping and had that look of "Oh..Sob..Sob...isn't she just wonderful"
At the time, Okra was making about $435,000 per episode...so her gift was about One Minute of her earnings (after Commercials).

Big Fucking Deal. :)
