7. Dmitri Shostakovic.
If you hear one of his pieces and it's boring and derivative, then it's one that he was forced to write. If you hear one and it's fantastic or it really makes you feel something, then it's one of his "Fuck you" pieces to the people in the russian government who were making his life hell.

But I like what I have heard of his music.

I might even have some here, I have well over 300 CDs, almost half are classical.

10. I haven't played that much of his work before,
but all the ones I've played have been the 'fuck you' ones. I.E., the good ones. :)

If you can find a copy of his 8th string quarter, I recommend listening to it. It's not pleasant, but it's powerful as hell.

17. Even the most modern of composers can have fun with an old formula. :)
That's something I discovered recently. At first my stuff all sounded stuffy and a bit baroque because I didn't know how to break the rules really. Then once I started learning how, I went back and wrote something in a renaissance style, and more recently in a baroque style and had a lot of fun with it. :)

And a truly great composer like Shostakovic can take a simple formula and turn it into something with beauty and complexity. :)

I love the guy. Being a bay area kind of guy, I have gotten to know him. He is the most intellegent person I have ever been around.

He founded the SEVA Foundation and they have given millions of people eyesight around the world. He has Camp Winnarainbow and they are a performing arts camp in Mendo county. For evry paid tuition, one scholarship is offered to someone less fortunate. When I was starting my not for profit,(inspired mostly by Wavy and Julia Butterfly) the Make A Fish Foundation, I asked him to be on our board and if he could make a fish item. he agreed to both once I gave him the rundown on what it was about. no business plan, no policy paper, none of the rigamaroll ,just "I think it's cool so I'll do it". Unfortunately, my parent situation has put the foundation in hiatus, but when it comes back Wavy will be part of it.

A life well lived.

All three have influenced me in a major way. Sad that only Jello Biafra is still alive out of the three. I would love to hear Thompson's take on our current situation, and Sagan's compassion is needed more than ever.

26. I was immediately inspired when I heard about this person on DemocracyNow
and she has had a big influence on my life. She devoted 738 days of her life engaged in a tree sit to protest the clearcutting of old-growth forests. She endured heavy-duty harrassment for standing up for what she believed and I had the honor to have her visit and speak to my classes. She is a humble and deeply spiritual person and she has had a major influence on my life.

The doofy looking dude above is Jean-Paul Sartre, the quote is his as well.

Bertrand Russell

Peter Singer

David Hume

Roland Barthes

Denis Diderot

I can't find a picture but any discussion in photos of important influences would be incomplete without a mention of my college Philosophy 201/202 lecturer at CUA, Dan Dwyer. Dan's the teacher who introduced me to the works of David Hume and suggested that if I liked Voltaire, I'd love Diderot; a far way down the line that influence caused me to change my concentration from International Relations to Political Theory (which is the study of politics as a humanity rooted in philosophy and communications.) The loss to the diplomatic community may never be known...but I am smarter for it, blessed with a life-long love of the pursuit of empirical truth and knowledge for its' own sake.

In high school I was given a list of autobiographies, had to pick one to read - I complained to the teacher that they were all written by white men.....he said OK - my task was to read a book written by a black woman. I chose "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." It truly opened my eyes. :)

My Parents..a bad photo but the only one I have. By their actions alone towards other people, they taught me that there are good people in the world, you have to find them by being one yourself.

These 2 people influenced me the most in my life. From day 1 they have taught me to never give up,keep your promises, and that with their support I can do anything. Funny what children teach their parents.
