Male Rock Fans likely to Vote Republican
http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSN0230987520080403

It also found that John McCain, the Republican candidate for U.S. president, was the top pick for the Oval Office for men and classic rock partisans -- those people who tune in to stations playing music from the "original classic rock era" of 1964 to 1975, comprised of bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd.

Kind of flaky figures but I'm a fan of Zeppelin and Floyd and I'm a Democrat...am I supposed to listen to Deathcab or something?

1. did they support Bush ?
i'm not sure we should look at all supporting McCain as the same type that voted for Bush right now.

some people still think McCain is some kind of maverick and that could explain this.

3. Pink Floyd fans are NOT gonna vote for McCain...
I have tons of friends of many ages that love Pink Floyd, and they are all crazy hippies or alt culture people. John "Bomb Iran" McCain? Nope.. but nice try reuters.

21. But the Ted Nugent fans certainly will.
The male ones anyway. The female Nugent fans probably aren't old enough to vote.

23. My sis-in-law's boyfriend leans so far right, he's horizontal.
His music of choice is, in order:

Floyd
More Floyd
Anything with David Gilmour
Some more Floyd

He fronts a classic-rock band. The irony of some of the songs he performs is thick enough to make an ocean-spanning bridge, but there ya go.

I feel most new stuff coming out today sucks. But I'm being an ass for an ass. Seriously though, I think this may be the first generation where parents will actually make fun of their kids music for being too lame.

13. I can and will refute that assertion if you would like.
I will also point you to music from the 70s that blows the standard AOR "classic" rock out of the water. But then I'm a music snob. :P

28. yeah, but so much new music is derivative of the worst of 80s music
i could accept a new band that does derivative music of bread or something.

plus, your average modern hipster wants so hard to look like rod stewart, it's actually scary.

10. That's it, I'm switchin' off the radio and only playing Pat Boone on my 8-track
Is it OK if I listen to Pat's 'In A Metal Mood'?

btw:

"You've Got Another Thing Comin'"
"Smoke On The Water"
"It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N Roll")
"Panama"
"No More Mr Nice Guy"
"Love Hurts"
"Enter Sandman"
"Holy Diver"
"Paradise City"
"The Wind Cries Mary"
"Crazy Train"
"Stairway To Heaven"

-If you are a fan of any of the above songs, find a copy of Pat Boone's: "In A Metal Mood NO MORE MR.NICE GUY" for an entertaining twist.

20. You may be part of the percentage that doesn't.

Personally, from my own experience's growing up people who listen to classic rock all seemed like Repubs in waiting. Now, I realize that many aren't, and it includes a brazillion factors besides what they listen too, but I don't find these numbers surprising in the slightest.

If it makes you feel better I listen to some pretty misanthropic black metal and I wouldn't be surprised to see many of that genre's fans voting for RWers either.

22. I like a lot of classic rock, but I am not too surprised
I mean, if you're looking for "classic rock" fans, you're going to be getting a disproportionate number of white, "working-class"/middle-class males, perhaps with a tendency towards "red" state dwellers- a prime Repug demographic no matter how you slice it.

32. That's definitely true for the classic rock stations in the southeast TX/southwest LA area, too
I can't even listen to them in the morning w/o having my finger alert and ready to hit the scan button as soon as the songs end. In some cases, they aren't even the local deejays, but national-level racist and sexist programs, which is even more pathetic...

Edited on Fri May-09-08 10:29 AM by Rob H.
He's the biggest fan of The Who and Pink Floyd I've ever met and he's a dyed-in-the-wool raving liberal lefty, so I don't know if those stats are completely accurate.

I used to post on a board dedicated to a specific brand of guitar, though, and the owner/founder was a giant, right-wing douchebag, as were a quite of few of the admins. (IMHO, of course.)

35. Classic/Prog/Jazz/old R&B guy here
and I'm no rethug...used to be some years ago, but those days (that daze?) is LONG gone. Der Chimpenfuehrer cured me of THAT disease. Now I can actually agree with a lot of the lyrics! :P

(It is odd that righties would be so gaga over classic rock, much of the lyric content is not exactly right-friendly...and one classic fave, Rush, is heavily freethought-centric and openly agnostic/atheistic lyrically.)

41. 'Wouldn't say 'shit' if he had a mouthful'
:D

It just yanks me — during "Money" on the "Delicate Sound of Thunder" concert video, the shot inexplicably cuts to some assdip hollering "BULLSHIT!" It's like, "Dudes, we've known since 1973 that that's in there because the AM stations bleeped it. We don't need to see some Long Island suckhole jerking himself over the reason he came to the show."

 :hi:
