In about 14 hours I'm going to have a camera shoved up my ass
That's right, the ol' Droopster is going in for a colonoscopy. Fortunately, I get to be heavily sedated, which means I'll probably sleep through the whole thing. That's what I'm hoping anyway. The doc says he thinks I have irritable bowel syndrome, but he has to do the colonoscopy to make sure it's not something else. He's also doing a biopsy while he's in there.

I had to take 2 days off of work to do this. I'm preparing to do the prep for the procedure which involves a gallon bottle of some kind of laxative. I'm a trucker and I couldn't do that stuff and work.

1. You'll be fine - you won't even know what happened
You'll wake up in your hospital bed wondering why they didn't do the procedure, when they actually did. The prep is the worst part.

2. Yuck.
The prep is by far the worst of it..with the sedation you won't feel anything.
Good luck

6. I had one a couple of years ago
Didn't need sedation, sadly, but it was easier than I had first anticipated.

Best of luck with the procedure.

7. Whew, that stuff is nasty!
The directions said I could have mixed it with Crystal Light. I wish I would have now. Those flavor packets don't work too good.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. :)

9. I hope it's not a Hasselblad, they're big and bumpy
I've had three C-scopes, for the first two, I woke up as they were "pulling out" which was fine by me, I got to watch the procedure on the Monitor. They burned off polyps, took biopsies and pointed out interesting and aesthetic features of the Colon....For the last one I was out for the duration....drag.....

Funny, the instrument looks like an S&M device.......

Anyway, the prep sucks mightily, but the procedure is just fine.

10. My daughter and I both have IBS.
After years of tests and pills, we began to take probiotics from the health food store. It has been a miracle and we suffer no more, with the exception of a relapse if we eat food that is too rich. They are really cheap too. We get the kind that is kept refrigerated, but they do have others that you can just carry with you. One dose a day and the problem is solved. My sister's girlfriend also had a terrible case of it and could never leave the house after eating. She is also doing really well on the pills and is pretty much symptom free. Good luck with the colonoscopy tomorrow. It is good to have one done. But please do some research on probiotics and IBS on the internet when you feel up to it. p.s. My hubby is a trucker too. You guys are the best!! :hi:

24. I know it is hard to appreciate now but.....
getting a good colon cleanse is really beneficial to you. Once you get everything out, it is like getting a fresh start! I know people who do the colon cleanse once or twice a year on purpose, if you can imagine. Yuck. It will get rid of so many toxins and then when you get the test over with, you can start fresh. I guess that is a way to look at the whole experience with a "glass half full" attitude. Good luck tomorrow and I am sure everything will turn out great. My thoughts and prayers will be with you. Peace.

Said it wasn't that bad. What she said was worse was drinking the laxative and running to the bathroom every ten minutes. :hurts:

19. Yup, the clean out!!!
However, it has to be thorough or the procedure will be stopped and you will have to come back, so make sure you do it all. You want pretty much clear liquid coming out. Good luck and don’t tell them anything while you are under.

after that it's nothing. I worried about it for two years, finally did it last summer and it was not worth worrying at all. Both my husband and I had one and we got cute little pictures of the inside of our colons too!!! I'm thinking of making them into a digital Christmas card like those family pics people send you. HaHa

16. Piece of cake Droopy...
I've had two of them...

1) Just drink the stuff. It's not that bad.

2) Get some reading material and sit on the toilet while you drink it.

3) The procedure itself is actually kind of fun. Fantastic drugs that make you feel goooooood.

Good luck.

20. chuck palahniuk once asked my dad if he filmed his colonoscopy
when my dad (his name is jack) went to the doc, he made a crack about jack's angry colon. some months later, he went to a book signing chuck was doing and related the story to him and that's when chuck asked my father if he got the procedure on video...my dad was a bit weirded out by that

not really

but the prep is the worst part

you fortunately won't remember much about the camera up your ass part

and then you'll wake up wondering where the hell you are

good luck with it

ugh, the gallon bottle of what, go lightly? (nothing lightly about it)

27. I've had 2, nothing to it, the hard part is what you're doing now,
getting blown out. You pretty much can't feel anything when they do it, even though you may be awake. They also usually do a biopsy as a normal part of the procedure.

28. The thought is worse than the actual procedure
I'm a pretty modest person and I was mortified of the whole thing. But, next time I won't dread it so much. My prep was easy...I took pills. I think about 20 horse sized pills in a half hour or something like that. I don't hear that prescribed often from people, but it was an easy prep for me.

I've heard they put some kind of drug in the IV that makes you forget the whole thing. I believe it cause I don't remember a thing....except enjoying the high. :)

Good luck, Droopy!

The procedure involves lovely drugs.

After the procedure, I proceeded (against medical advice) to Sonic for a bacon, egg & steak burrito and a Sonic-size tots. Please try to be somewhat more responsible than that.

You've probably had the procedure completed by now and will be coming home soon. Let us know how you are doing.

Like others have said here, and I'm sure you know by now, that the worst part is the prep.

38. I've been through two - there's really nothing to fear! As far as
your IBS, I've made some dietary adjustments after reading all kinds of stuff, and this site in particular was extremely helpful...

http://www.helpforibs.com/

Simply distinguishing between soluble and insoluble fiber was a huge deal for me - my symptoms have decreased dramatically over the past several months since making those adjustments.
