Midlos raccoon post gave me an idea for another post
Have you had any run ins with the wild critters that live around your area??

MIne is

One night at 2am we were woken up by the sound of scratching in our closet....
got up and looked in the closet where we were greeted by a squirrel just breaking through the sheet rock!!!!
We used a hanger and scared the squirrel back out where ever it was he came from
and my husband actually cut another piece of sheetrock and spackled it in...
then we went to back to sleep

Just the other day my sons partner was on a call and getting out of the back of the ambulance and a squirrel jumped or fell on his head
Scratched the shit out of it... he had to be taken to the ER in said ambulance and had a battery of blood work along with a brazillion shots
and they have to keep an eye on him....
Poor kid was hurtin..

1. Raccoon Gorn
I was on the computer, and Woos was looking out the back porch, and i heard this curdling
cat sound, she was looking at a huge raccoon that had gotten into my little backyard when i lived in the duplex, the thing was huge, so i threw something at it to get it out of there,
Woos wanted to fight it.....6years ago
I still miss her....

:hi:

2. Almost crashed my mountain bike into a 9-10 foot alligator
There we are, just me and my Sugar (Gary Fisher Sugar, that is) hauling through the pine flatwoods. Yes, I said pine flatwoods. Alone, middle of the woods. Coming around the corner, I see what I think is a downed tree/log across the path. I start thinking about how I'm going to hop it at speed. Then the log moved. The "log" was a HUGE alligator stretched across the path. I hit the brakes and dumped the bike and myself down roughly 10 feet from it. Luckily my bike (sorry, girl) was between myself and the gator. If it wanted me, it'd have to eat the bike first.

I quickly got up, and the fucking thing turned at me and hissed. Godawful stench of a breath. I figured he'd just move along once he saw me stand up. Nuh uh. So, I scanned quickly for a tree I could climb IF he decided I looked yummy, since I knew that he'd beat me in the short foot race. I grabbed my back wheel and dragged my bike back away from him.

That's when I heard the next rider. I yelled for him to slow down, which he did. He about shit himself when he saw my crash marks in the dirt. We spent 5 minutes discussing how we'd get around him. He decided for us, and commenced on his way back to his lake.

Thankfully.

7. i feed the squirrels and birds in my backyard.
so i have lots of those -- at night when i go out to smoke -- there's skunks and raccoons and opossums.

the raccoons can be aggressive -- but the skunks and i just recognize each other and go on about our business -- and the poor opossums are afraid of everything.

12. Huge fox in our back yard 2 days ago
All I heard was the weird noises -- I thought one of the cats was having hallucinations/asthma attack.

DH took a look out back and spotted the fox -- the biggest one he'd ever seen.

I mentioned it to Bill, one of the neighbors. He said it was probably one of the ones Mrs. Butler feeds.

Feeds? :wow:

Bill said Mrs. Butler, who lives on the court behind our houses, regularly feeds six or seven foxes and has done it for years. He said he and others have complained to the state department of wildlife, but nothing is done about it. It's illegal to feed them, Bill said. And nobody can tell Mrs. B. anything - she's apparently a law unto herself.

No wonder we see foxes passing through the neighborhood now and then.

I wonder what she feeds them. Purina Fox Chow?

20. Sure it wasn't a coyote?
I've started seeing them around here. The tail is pretty fox-like. But they're taller.

But he swears it was a fox.

Probably a pudgy, well-fed fox.

22. I've seen them in the neighborhood.
I'm guessing this one was old enough to do some exploring. The others were probably hanging out in our yews, or under the porch or somesuch.

--Deer staring at me through the living room window. (those black eyes are scary up close.)
--Raccoons fornicating on the patio on a moonlit night.
--Coyote trotting down the street in broad daylight and walking right past me as if it were perfectly normal.

Squirrels of the tree and ground variety and birds are sources of endless entertainment. Do not wear a brightly colored, flower print shirt near a hummingbird feeder. Trust me on this.

15. Well I've had a couple of encounters
with not so meek opossums..Once on campus at U of Maryland..It was stuck at the bottom of an outdoor stairwell and when a friend and I went to look closer hissed and showed a mouthful of sharp teeth.
Then a year later I was living with my mother when one came up to her sliding glass door and peered into the living room. It was weird. It just sat and watched us for awhile and then got bored and wandered off..The next night I came home late from a party and when walking accross the yard to the walkway noticed what I thought was a cat sitting on the walkway..until I got close and it slowly got up and walked away and I saw the long rat like tail......
