My best wishes to you for happiness and success in the future.

:-) Did you at least have a decent retirement party? Get a shadow box with your ranks, medals, the flag, etc?

27. Yes to all of the above
I read a poem (Lay of the Last Signalman - I posted it on DU earlier this week) and gave a bunch of people the sniffles, including myself.

28. Sort of.
He gave a vague apology then asked me for advice since he was being sent to Afghanistan. I gave him a piece from Kipling...

"When you're lying on the Afghan plains
And the women come to cut up what remains
Just roll on your rifle and blow out your brains
And go to your Gawd like a soldier!"

I was accused of being cruel. And perhaps I was.

Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 04:24 PM by Lizz612
Sucks that Bush* defaced your certificate. Should try to get the next President to sign it, tell him the last one wasn't really elected and therefore not really the president and you would like a real presidential signature.

32. The party of the President doesn't bother me...
I'd feel no shame to have Reagan or Bush (the Greater) signature...

The fact that I have a deserter who was never elected, that bothers me.

33. Yes
Had a friend who told me in great detail how he was going to get rid of the one signed by Bill Clinton...
He now has it framed on his wall... in hindsight, while he doesn't LIKE Bill Clinton, he says he was not awful as President. So he kept it and framed it and put it on his wall instead of getting one signed by Bush. Some Republican, eh?

BTW: Coast Guard Senior Chief?

31. Never did get one of those certificates from Reagan when I got out!
See, the Navy and I didn't get along too well, so they let me go home early. They were nice enough to give me an honorable discharge, but I think that was just to get rid of my ass.

Come to think of it, that means I have something in common with Dubya!

Sorry HawkerHurrican... sorry that this occassion for you could not be presided over by a real President. You certainly deserve better than thanks from a chimp.

Know that many, many good folks are working out there so the military will be led by a COC who is worthy of them. They all deserve better.

Thanks for you service, HH. Thanks from a grateful citizen.

37. Hey Hawker!
Congrats and thanks again for your service

bbuuuuuuttttttttttt.

Now you're going to actually have to decide what to wear everyday.

After my Dad's 20+ years, that was the hardest thing for him.

Also, our best family friend retired as a Chief Petty Officer. When interviewed for the base magazine, they asked him what motivated him to work so hard to become a CPO? His answer: So I wouldn't have to call some a**h*le "Mister". they actually printed it.

38. Deciding what to wear...
is easy.

Having to buy and wear 'nice' civilian clothes will be hard.

For 20 years, if I had to get 'dressed up', I wore my dress uniform. Now I can't.

As for your father's comment...
What many people don't realize is calling a Junior Officer 'Mister Smith' is a mild insult... Calling him by his rank (Ensign Smith) or title (especially as a nickname like 'Cheng', 'Nav', 'First', 'Ops', 'Gunno', etc.) is a sign of respect.

OR
