Apple Says It Has 100,000 Orders for iPod Mini

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (NasdaqNM:AAPL - news) said on Tuesday it has received 100,000 orders for its iPod mini digital music player, which goes on sale on Friday at Apple's retail outlets, its online store and through resellers.

The maker of Macintosh (news - web sites) computers also said that retailer Target Corp. (NYSE:TGT - news) this week will start selling $15 prepaid cards for Apple's online music store alongside top-selling CDs and set up featured display areas where consumers can play with iPods at its 1,200 stores in the United States.

The prepaid cards carry a code that users key in when they enter Apple's online music store, iTunes.

The slender, smaller iPod mini -- about the length and width of a business card, weighing 3.6 ounces and holding 1,000 songs -- is Apple's answer to cheaper but lower-capacity flash-memory-based digital music players.

1. Are they going to have replaceable batteries?

Did you guys know that iPods batteries only last 18 months and than they die, forcing you to buy a new iPod? You can't replace the battery.

Yeah, its their dirty little secret.

Everyone needs to keep this in consideration.

It's called planned obsolescence and it's why I will never buy an iPod.

I will buy another mp3 player with a removable battery for about 150 dollars less....iPods are a joke.

3. The battery is replaceable, just not easily by the user.
There are lots of Mac service places and mail-order companies that sell a battery replacement service. The new battery is $70 - $90 or so, plus an installation charge.

And lots of iPods have been running for longer than 18 months.

4. Yeah, the cost of a new iPod!

And yes, some of them run longer than 18 months...so what? They should have some AA batteries that you can replace.

I take it you are an iPod owner?:)
