9. They're both great.
I've heard some good covers in my lie, but that might be one of the very best. The Cranberries original is a fantastic piece of rock music, and the cover by Miser more than does it justice. Glad to share! :hi:

And it's clearly one of the better covers ever done. It's certainly in my MP3 collection.

Edited on Sun May-04-08 09:37 PM by drmeow
but I think this one qualifies as pretty radically different:

I actually dig the Cardigans version, but nobody tops Black Sabbath on this one!

My very first live concert was Black Sabbath back in 1970 something, and it was AWESOME !!!

Thank YOU !!!

18. I did think about the movie
when I was writing.

I like both versions - I had the Cardigans one for over a year before I made the connection, probably cause I'm not a big Sabbath fan so I didn't actually have the original. One day I was listening and thought - "WAIT A MINUTE, 'I am Ironman'? - this is a cover!" - I'd never actually looked at the name of the song.

I wouldn't pick one as better than the other - both are great.

:)

FNM is one of my all time favorite bands, and while some of Patton's projects are a bit... on the unlistenable side of experimental, I still have tons of respect for him. And what a fucking singer! Guy has some pipes, chops, and attitude.

Have you heard their version of "This Guy's In Love With You"?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-XzqcP79vQ

original (written by Burt Bacharach, performed by Herb Alpert)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqmhXmTsCPw

What's funny is I have both playing now creating this strange, jazzy chaos...

Also love old Joe Jackson - "Got the Time" from his 1977 debut. fuckin Graham
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq3EYeDOpVA

Anthrax cover it well, but the original is so much better
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0Mgp4n9r58

My band does this song, and most people go "love the Anthrax song" lol.... noobs.

27. Interesting history
Prince wrote the song but had not recorded it (or at least had not released it on any album) when O'Connor did it. When it came out (ah, yes, I remember it well) it was said (inaccurately) that he wrote it specifically for her (It was actually recorded by The Family in 1985, a version which has essentially vanished).

Great original from Edwin Starr, and a great live cover by Bruce Springsteen. I've always respected Springsteen more than liked him, but I loved his cover of this song...

The Melvins do this song too, but that's not on YouTube.

Neither is my favorite cover song of all time; Isaac Hayes's vastly-superior-to-the-Beatles version of "Something". It's far too astounding for words.

94. Kula Shaker's cover of Deep Purple's "Hush"
I love how they basically doubled the tempo and made the song rock.

I'm also partial to The Atari's version of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer."

As I recall, the cover wasn't received terribly well- especially in the UK. But Harriet Wheeler could sing the phone book to me and I'd be all over it....
