Well, I made my choice. And I am sticking with it.
I recently started a new job in IT working with another guy handling the IT needs of a medium sized Ambulance company. A really good old guy who is more trained in EMT than computers, but he has kept them floating by with their main apps. I have made a huge difference there in my short time and gotten to know a lot of really nice and caring people.

Then a big company whom I interviewed with finally called me back offering me 12k more a year, better benefits, vacation, etc.

I am staying where I am. For one, I don't generally start a job and quit it unless the person(s) I am working for is a complete asshole (which was true with my last job). Not to mention that it is nice to work in a small shop where I make a difference every day and people are nice.

The company has serious issues coming down the pike which I am able to head off and fix, and others are not (they hired one guy for two months and he had no clue). I can't abandon my boss. And maybe someone, somewhere decided I made the right choice today:

My boss is a 'good old boy' if you will here in this red county. But he has adopted several kids and has several foster kids, all of Mexican descent (he is white). He has volunteered for hospital boards in his small town (he does not live here) and done a lot for kids over the years. He spends his weekends helping others and his community.

Today we had some folks from a local tech company come in (we buy parts from them) and after talking to me they want me to do some side work for them and their customers programming, which will more than make up for the difference in pay. And my boss is glad I am staying and will get me a raise in 90 days - not 12k, but enough to remove some of the sting.

So in the end - I didn't leave a good guy hanging who was counting on me to solve their issues, and I will probably end up making more in the long run this year.

Not to mention the fact I get to play with ambulances and Helicopters and their computers :)

1. Good for you. I'm sure it was a very difficult decision.
Being happy is a lot more important than $$$$.

3. good deal
12k is a LOT of money, but if you don't need it to get buy, why change? And if you actually LIKE your job, that's even better.

4. I do need it - but I also need some sanity after years in a corp environment
I would rather make money on the side to make up for it and have some control over my life.

I could have went places with them, and they will probably toss me a new offer (they hinted at that already) but at 42 I want a job I can enjoy with people I like. Some of the nicest people I have ever met here (emt's, paramedics, field supervisors, etc). Fun, relaxed, and still serious about the job. I feel like I am serving my community in many ways (as so many of them do on their off hours), whereas the cable company that wants me seems more...I dunno, cold.

8. excellent! a wise man once told me "never do anything for the money"
do it because it's what you want. do it because it's the right thing, do it because you love it or the people.

but never do anything 'for the money'
