Anyone have experience with foam mattresses or toppers? We opened one and it STINKS to HIGH HEAVEN!

We decided to try out one of Cosco's 2 1/2 inch mattress toppers. It was about $150.00.

(This is NOT Temperpedic -- even Wickes brand was expensive -- we passed that option up at $1090.00 for a full mattress.)

We opened it around 4 PM yesterday and gently pulled the package apart.

The smell is overwhelming! Just disgusting! We put it in our grandkids' room and sprayed it with Febreze. The whole house is involved this morning.

Please tell me if you have had any forays into this bedding material.

I'm not sure I can stand the smell and have the option of returning it for a full refund to one of the Costco stores.

Thanks for anything you can add to this discussion.

1. We bought that EXACT same mattress from Costco!
Don't worry-- the smell WILL dissipate after a short while. It really does make sleeping more comfortable!

Open some windows, and enjoy! :hi:

3. Thanks, temeah. You're very kind to reply.

Enjoy the day! We're waiting for a possible offer on our house -- send good vibes if you got any!

9. I had one as well
and it does take several days for the smell to go away and also for the foam to fully expand. If you've got a spare room to stick it in for a couple days before you use it that might be helpful. I remember I also sprayed it with lavender linen spray before I put the sheets, etc. on it. I'm rather addicted to lavender linen spray because I have chronic insomnia issues and the smell really does make me feel relaxed. Hope you like the pad once you start using it. Makes sheets sort of hard to apply because it's so thick but feels like heaven.

11. Hi Connonym -- I have some lavender spray and I'll try it on Wednesday.

The memory foam still has the acrid odor, although somewhat dissipated this Tuesday evening. I had the windows open but it was shining and then raining and hailing all day long. We saw two BEAUTIFUL rainbows this afternoon.

For insomnia, I am using Valerian tablets (2x per night) -- that stuff smells absolutely awful in the tablet form, but luckily, it works quite well. The product is called Relaxane.

Hope you have a good night's sleep, and thanks for your comments.

Cordially,

2. The instructions should have said that you need to let it air out for a day or two
or three, as I recall. The smell definitely goes away. You shouldn't put any linens on it until it's aired out.

4. It's going to stay where it is -- on the floor of a rarely used room.

Unless and until it smells better.

Maybe a bit better with the windows open now.

Thanks so much PelosiFan!

5. It takes about 2 or 3 days for the foam to expand to it's full size anyway.
So that's also a good time to let it air out. Open all the windows you can, and if you have a spare room where you can close the door (and not smell it) even better.

After a couple days, it shouldn't really smell anymore.

7. I forgot about that!
Seriously - we got a Tempurpedic 4 years ago and I didn't even remember the smell until I saw your post!

So, it will go away and become a faint memory!

8. Do you like your Tempurpedic? Their money-back guarantee is crap...

You pay thousands of dollars for a T-bed, and if you don't like it, it becomes a STORE CREDIT -- then you have spent enough to buy two or THREE more regular innerspring beds!!!

Sorry, didn't work for me at all when I investigated with both the 800 number and local dealers like Sleep Country USA (here in Oregon).

Peace, Iris,

10. I have one of those (a different brand, but basically the same thing).
I was also a little worried at first when I unwrapped it because it really did smell bad. But I let it air out for a few days and the smell finally went away. Now I love it; it's really, really comfortable. I think you'll like it.

12. Thanks, Ocelot. I'll like it much better when I finally get it on a bed!

It's still on the carpet in one of our extra rooms.

Have a good Wednesday in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I've never been there in my whole life! Hubby Audio Al and I would like to walk in the Mall of America. We just took a nice walk in Washington Square, Tigard, Oregon. We might have used a footpath in a beautiful wooded area, but it's been raining off and on all day today, so we went indoors.

Warm regards,

Radio Lady in OR

13. UPDATE: Still smelling very badly... not sure I want it anymore...
Oh, well.

It's not the first purchase I've returned to Costco.

Peace,

RL
