1. There are plenty of shiny new programmers overseas.
They cost less and need less maintenance than Americans, too. I hear that it will revitalize the economy by buying foreign work, anyway...

8. Delaware sucks (no offense). I think there is stuff

in Central Jersey, in the Mercer/Middlesex County area, and NYC is starting to pick up again. From what I hear, financial services is hiring more techwise as well.

I hear there's also quite a bit in DC (much of it is for defense contractors, but there you go.

What is vital is to think of yourself as more than a programmer. A consultant, a financial specialist, a whatever. Be willing to be a software developer in a industry/company in which the actual programming is only part of the job.

On edit: I don't know your situtation, but if you have a career where IT is part of it instead of the whole thing, it can be easier to be secure.

10. I'm looking for Linux help
for less than $125/hr.

When my computer arrived 6 months 5 kernels and 4 video drivers ago, all I had to do to get Neverwinter Nights working was to install the Nvidia drivers.

Now no GL apps (including screen savers) work right.

Grrrrrrr

4. Come up with a product
Find a niche industry and needs a certain tool and develop it for them - this is the kind of stuff "Indian Programmers" have no concept for.

12. On the bright side it's a great way to lose weight
When I was unemployed and eating nothing but peanut butter sandwiches, ramen noodles, and marked-down ground beef for a year I was in the best shape of my entire life. You could even see my abs. Now that I am working again I can afford fast fast food and I've gained like 20 pounds. Go figure.

9. Join the club
I'm a slightly used computer programmer too. I was pretty much unemployed for almost three years before I got my current one 6 months ago. Problem is my employer looks like they will go belly-up by the end of next month.

The trick is to get a job you need a security clearance for. They can't outsource those.

11. Seriously -
have you looked at the US Government jobs database? Also, you might wish to look up SAIC at http://www.saic.com/ (I hear they're looking for JAVA people). Also Computer Associates at http://www.cai.com

You might also wish to check out Get A Freelancer at http://getafreelancer.com/

Hope that helps...

18. I hate SAIC!
SAIC is the reason my current company is going out of business. We had a major project we were working for a brigade of the Army, and a couple of months ago some cronies of theirs in SAIC approached them and said that they could manage it better, so they just squeezed themselves in as a middle man, but then subcontracted the entire project to us anyway, because the project was too small for them and their $300/hr programmers were "too good" to "waste time" working on a simple web-based application. Then a couple of weeks ago they "discovered" that our company didn't have a high enough security clearance to have access to the information necessary to complete the project, so they just killed the whole damn thing.

21. Check that
I just looked at their site and they have a ton of jobs I am qualified for and I even have a security clearance. I'm gonna get me some of that $300/hr action.

25. True - they're aggressive.
But...they also are employee owned. And if one can fit into the organization, one can (as I understand it) do very well indeed.

Good luck!

19. PM my dad
He does the entrepenurial online stuff. He's made himself and a few others literally millions in legal online businesses. He doesn't do MLM or any of that stuff. He doesn't do porn, either. I do know that whoever works with him gets a part of the company. I don't know if he has anything working right now or not, but you might check. His DU nic is alwynsw. I know he's honest enough to give you all the good with the bad.

Sorry if I broke the rules, but I can't send pm's yet.

20. I'm another one. Although I think "slightly used" is no longer
a description. I know 4 others programmers out of work too. Every time there is a republican in the White House I have to get a new career. You can imagine how ticked off I am.

24. local universities?
UNC almost always has programmer positions open. Same with Duke. If you have any decent-sized universities nearby, check their HR pages.
