Mel Gibson just slammed Shrub
He was talking to Diane Sawyer about going where no one could find him. He literally said he could pitch his tent next to the weapons of mass destruction and no one would ever find him.

*blink*

*blink*

Color me stunned.

2. I don't know if that's a Bush slam
He could just be saying that they're hidden so well that no one could find them, or something like that.

5. I suppose but I don't think so...
there was a whole lotta sarcasm in the comment. I don't like Mel AT ALL so I'm not inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt...but it came across to me as a slam.

25. Er, not quite.
He's one of those anti-Vatican II Catholics. JP2 isn't reactionary enough for those folks.

4. That's odd
I remember seeing something on here that said that basically Gibson was a fundie. I hope he is on the light side of the force. God knows we could use more people with his kind of power on our side.

6. Mel is far from being a fundie....
he's an "old school" Catholic which has absolutely NOTHING to do with
the "born again" nut cases that have taken hold of our country.

16. I have read articles about him
saying that he is a real "family man" and has very strong morals.

But I'm not sure how strong your morals are if you play Martin Riggs for 4 movies (not to mention he's pretty much Martin Riggs in every other movie too)

Fundamentalists and Catholics do NOT get along. Never forget what a "protestant" is protesting against ;-)

21. I never liked mass after they switched to English
and had guitars & back-slapping & handshakes etc..

I know they felt the need to "modernize", but it was fine the way it was..
Of course, this is from a fallen-away Catholic, turned agnostic:)

7. I hadn't heard that
but watching and listening I started thinking he was. Then as I listened I realized it is a religious belief he has but with no wingnut politics attached. That was my impression, anyway. I agree, wel put Mel.

18. singing detective
LOL. The film was written by Dennis Potter before his death, so any changes to the film were done by the guy who wrote the miniseries. Certain lines were changed and here was a more optimistic tone, which many people did not like, but to tell the truth, I thought it was nice how they edited it down to the bare bones of the story, which is the story of a man fighting against himself, who has to "pick up his own bed and walk". I still like the miniseries better, but the film IMO was fantastic as well, even if you only watch it for the performances. I recomend it. It was unfairly criticised as was the original was when it came out 20 years ago. I think it is out on DVD soon. I think that Downey, Gibson, and Penn were deserving of Oscar nominations. The make-up is much more graphic, so be prepared for that.

He's a devout Catholic, and that's about it.

Most likely, he's indifferent.

Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 08:02 AM by onebigbadwulf
I only consider protestants as fundies.

Catholics don't take the entire bible literally- and therefore dont support fundie things like pollution, death penalty, and the ending of social programs.

27. But Gibson does take the bible literally
so much so that he believes his wife is going to hell. He's also extremely homophobic and is quite vicious in his expression of it.

30. The Houston Chronicle had an interesting article
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 05:03 PM by geniph
on Catholic Traditionalists and Gibson's movie:

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/ae/movies/jump/2321098

The article also points out that Hutton Gibson, Mel's dad, unquestionably belongs to the anti-semitic far-right lunatic fringe of the Traditionalist movement.
