Who else is planning on totally ignoring the Olympics this year?
I don't know what's happend to the Olympics. Back when I was a kid they were all about the athletes and nations coming together. Now it seems the Olympics are nothing more than the worlds largest billboard ad. The focus is on "making money" with ad placements and "sponsorships" everywhere. Frankly, I've just gotten so disgusted with the whole circus that I just can't watch them anymore.

Anyone else feel the same?

3. I love the olympics...
especially the wrestling event. The Winter Olympics are even better, in my opinion.

especially this year. They will be putting themselves into harms way in Athens. I am worried about a repeat of what happened in 1972 to the Israeli athletes.

9. Ugh.. Olympics
When I was a kid, I thought it was so cool--especially the Dan vs. Dave Reebok commercials for the 92(?) olympics. But now.. they just bore me. The winter ones aren't that bad.. I like hockey and curling and the skiing stuff, but running and jumping and basketball? I just don't see the point, I guess.

11. I haven't watched in years, either. When it became so commercial and
filled with professional athletes, I pretty much lost interest. And then there are all the really schmaltzy "life stories" they throw at you -- jeez, does it have to be so soap-opera-like? A few years ago I remember watching and just getting the feeling that I was being manipulated big time.

12. Yeah
Every one of those athletes has an AMAZING sob story. They've "overcome so many odds." Such cliches diminish the true glory of the olympics. There might never be another 1980 U.S. Hockey team.

13. The Olympics always sort of bored me
I appreciate the heroics of it all but I'd rather be watching baseball or american football any day.

14. Me. I used to love them "shamateurs" and all.
From about 1980 on, they have seriously tanked.

FWIW, the first Olympics I remember, all too vividly, was Munich in 1972. At the time, I was hoping that tennis would become an Olympic sport and I had dreams of competing.

I hate the corporate takeover, I hate the "Dream Team" (even though I am an enormous bb fan, I even hate that "shamateurism" has disappeared.

Sad to say, no one competes for the love of it anymore.

15. Yes, I don't care about them
I liked gymnastics when I was young (Olga Corbet and Nadia Comanechi), but ever since then I'm not interested. I watched some of the Olympics in the summer of 1996 because I was staying with friends in Florida and they wanted to watch them. I was bored. I'd rather watch old 30 year old reruns of sitcoms on TV Land.

17. I watch some of it.
There are some good summer sports in the olympics. I prefer the winter games though.

18. While the cynics ignore, I'm going to Athens!
Made arrangements three weeks ago, with an old college buddy. Started saving one week later, putting aside $20-$30 every night for deposit at the end of the week. Same disciplined strategy I successfully deployed before treks to Calgary '88, Barcelona '92, Lilliehammer '94, and Sydney '00. No more latenight pizzas so I'll even dump a few pounds. Los Angeles '84 was a hometown cinch, while Atlanta '96 and Salt Lake City '02 were freeway formalities.

You might guess I love the Olympics, billions of kilometers the premier sporting event on the planet. Especially if you arrive early, stay beyond, and partake in everything possible even if she doesn't understand a syllable you say!

The Olympics is the greatest gathering of interesting and diverse people imaginable. I'm not even sure what commercialized means. Must be some TV thing.

I'll yank a trusty Mac iBook, but frankly DU or anything internet/stateside is not going to be a priority.
