Given the 1k limitation, simple patterns constrained within a 16 color palette is the best option.

Besides, when you upload the image, it looks like it gets turned into a gif anyway.

Right-click on mine and see. IMO if the image is a high color photo, it will look better shrunk as a jpeg. If its a low color, high contrast cartoon-like image, then it will probably look better as a gif.

21. I must be an idiot...

because I tried to get my avatar down to 1k as a .jpeg, and I couldn't do it. I brought it down to the proper dimensions, and even took the resolution down a couple of notches, and it was still 3k!! So I had to save it as a .gif and it looks like crap.

I tried to make it a jpeg but the pixelation was even worse. What program would you use?

is good and free. It lets you pick the compression level for jpegs so you can get right under that 1kb limit.

It stretches it sideways a little. You might want to pad it with whitespace on the sides to make it 48x48.

And to be honest I didn't :shrug:

I was googling for a good source to work from and the first one I found was already the right scale. I just cropped out the good bits.



All the photos with him in uniform have bad lighting and/or very dark backgrounds which make him look indistinct. If you have a good clear shot of him in uniform I'd like to see what I could do with it.
