1. Probably depends on the state
Have you checked the web site for the program in your state? It may list the guidelines.

2. I am new to this disability coverage thing, but ...
My understanding is that Medicaid covers most everything, and to get extra coverage would amount to "double dipping", and making a profit.

I do think you could still get an indemnity policy, like so much per day if hospitalized.

I get Medicare now, and I know can get coverage for the co-ins. But I can't get major med, or anything that would allow me to make a "profit".

6. The cost of an indemnity policy depends on your age.
It's a policy that pays $100 day or more for hospitalization, depending on the option you choose. They usually pay double for Intensive care, or heart attack or cancer. I don't know your age - I'd guess between $20 to $40 a month depending on how old you are.

The thing is, an indemnity policy doesn't consider other insurance. It's money you can put in your pocket, or use for co-pays. You might also have a 6 to 12 month pre-existing period.

Hope this helps.

5. You CAN have other insurance (at least you can in Texas).
However, that other insurance MUST be disclosed and will only pay what Medicaid does not cover.

My information is current as of 2005 for Texas. I no longer work for the agency that administers Medicaid in Texas.
