Recommend metal bands here.
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 08:32 AM by seawolf
Nightwish, Leaves' Eyes, Iron Savior, Rammstein, Savatage (everything up to "Poets and Madmen") and Human Fortress are all worth listening to even if you're not normally a fan of the genre.

Opeth and the now-defunct Windir are good if you like death/black metal.

At least the new stuff anyway.

All That Remains "The Fall of Ideals"

Bullet for My Valentine "The Poison"

Avenged Sevenfold "City of Evil" and their self titled disc.

Gojira "From Mars to Sirius"

Killswitch Engage "The End of Heartache"

Trivium "The Crusade"

14. Really good extant metal (I lean towards death/thrash)
Necrophagist - Awesome guitar work. Really, the whole band are incredible musicians.....Dream Theater fans, these guys are better!

Arch Enemy - Politically-driven music, awesome guitars and the best female growler out there.

Lamb of God - Awesome driving riffage...and ever so tight. This is American metal as it should have been.

Black Dahlia Murder - Pure speed and brutality. Not only that, but the band are a bunch of nice guys, as well.

Job for a Cowboy - Fuckin' BRUTAL, but really some of the best hard, hard metal coming out nowadays.

Three Inches of Blood - Not a death metal band, but they do a great job. "The Goat-Rider's Horde" is a combination of awesome chunky metalness mixed with power vocals. This band is a real earworm.

So those are my picks

47. Absolutely
Arch Enemy was one of the best shows I have ever attended. Great music...tight as hell, and the audience was REALLY eye-opening. (It's not just young angry dudes any more...now it is older guys like me, ladies, kids....all walks of life represented.)

Metal has gone universal, and I could not be happier about it.

23. Behemoth remains one of my favorites
I'm obsessed with Primordial's latest, "To the Nameless Dead."

Iced Earth, before Matt Barlow left.

Falkenbach - awesome Viking metal

Blind Guardian - all nerds should check out their "Nightfall in Middle Earth" album. Yes, it is a rock opera of Tolkien's "Silmarillion." Epic.

Vintersorg - epic, melodic folk metal sung entirely in Swedish.

Wolves in the Throne Room - probably one of the best black metal bands I've heard. Nature-inspired BM from Oregon, of all places.

Meshuggah - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZvPM9D4hws Weird time signatures, polyrhythms and syncopes, and a dry sense of humor. Also you can learn a lot about the pineal gland by listening to their latest album.

Eluveitie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iijKLHCQw5o Celtic folk-metal from Switzerland.

And a sweet In Flames/Soilwork mashup I found on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOUQKYR0-UI

Death metal? Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, and Morbid Angel are all good, musically. Can't say I'm a big fan of that sort of "singing".

Just regular metal? It's hard to beat first-three-albums Metallica. Also Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, and good old Iron Maiden. Black Sabbath invented all this shit, so you know, props.

Painful, ugly, misanthropic sludge. Just the way I likes it.
