I just realized yesterday that taxes are due Tuesday.
I thought the 15th was Wednesday. I was planning to finish my taxes (yes, I do my own. Yes, I do them at the last minute) Tuesday evening. Then I looked at a calendar. I'm gonna finish 'em tonight.

I wonder what horrible thing happens if you mail your taxes a day late?

1. you are late, officially which means a fine and interest. So if you don't get
it together, print up a 4868 and send it in to get the deadline extended. I also do my own and at the last minute.

2. I'll send 'em out Tuesday. Most of the work is done.

Still have to figure my self-employment tax and finish a final, non-rough draft 1040. But I'll get it done.

Besides, I've never understood the whole idea of asking for an extension if you're gonna send the money you owe anyway. And I owe some (I pay quarterly, and I always underpay by a little bit).

But I am curious as to what the penalty and interest on one day would be.

7. Can't do mine online. There are some clergy-specific things
that the online programs don't allow for. I tried last year, and ended up talking to support people who told me it can't be done. The whole parsonage/housing allowance thing throws off the online programs.

5. If you owe taxes, mailing them late triggers a late fee and interest.
If you are owed a refund, nothing happens except your refund might take longer than it would if you submitted your forms on time.

6. If you are getting a refund and don't owe money
I don't think there is any penalty. The penalties are for late filing, when you owe taxes. That's at least how this non-accountant understands it.

9. I can't remember for sure but
I think there's a calculation for the penalties and interest in the book. Maybe. One day wouldn't add up to much, I wouldn't think but good to have it done on time. :hi:

11. I just did mine online.
Ended up paying a LOT less than I thought I was going to... which means a fairly decent refund will be coming my way. :)
