Watching Star Wars on Spike TV, I've got a question I bet you've never heard
when Red Leader fired his proton torpedoes on the Rebels first attempt/trench run to blow up the Death Star his shot just ended up hitting the surface and not going down the shaft, but it shows his surface hit shaking the inside of the death star and people inside falling over.

But then when Lukes shot ends up going IN the intended target, starting the chain reaction that blows the whole station up a few seconds later, the shots of Grand Moff Tarkin and all the other people on the inside getting ready to blow up the planet all show everyone steady and unaffected by any damage that might be going on to the Death Star.

What the Fuck? I can't be the first ubergeek to wonder this.

1. Listen to Red Leader's words: "They just impacted on the surface."
The surface explosions of Red Leader's torpedos would of course cause all kinds of visible damage.

Luke's torpedos were drawn into the exhaust port intact and probably didn't explode until they reached the reactor core. Remember, the explosions of the torpedos by themselves wouldn't cause the Death Star to blow up; they caused a chain reaction, and it was the critical mass from the chain reaction that caused the Death Star to go "boom".

Sheesh! I thought every Star Wars geek knew THAT! :eyes:

2. Bingo. My question is, why is Red Leader smiling as his ship is about to crash?
Does it look like he's got a smirk on his face to anyone else?

5. Umm... the Death Star is the size of a small moon.
So when a torpedo hits the Death Star, people on the other side aren't gonna notice.

6. One plot hole I saw in "Return Of The Jedi."
The second Death Star blows up.

Now it was in close orbit to Endor, why didn't the explosion and debris devastate the planet's surface?
