This administration runs parallel with the philosophies promoted by the C.I.A./military branches of government. Most of these characters are transplants from the former hawkish administrations of Nixon and Reagan and Bush 1. They see strength through intimidation. The use of nationalism and props from bygone wars as heroic and godlike. Cabinet members who push for pre-emption are plastered on T.V. screens and front pages. Who's that education secretary again?
A violent society is the unfortunate but acceptable byproduct of hero-warrior culture. Men children are taught, trained, and psychologically prepared for battle, just in case. Historic People of Peace are underplayed to promote the warrior. Carter should grace the dime and Reagan's name should be etched in some new C.I.A. building for accuracy.
Just as historic people of Peace are underplayed, solutions to conflict other than intimidation through violence are underplayed.
When a nation concentrates it's resources, skills, and young bright minds on the business of war, it must also promote the vision of a world that is unsettled and frightening. Without this campaign and promotion of fear our economy would suffer mightily, after all, we sell so many weapons.
When will the peacemakers shine and have so much influence? When will there be a cabinet position called "The department of Peace"?
