I noticed in the last two minutes the options page was changed to make it either gif or jpg

earlier it said .gif --- so I followed directions.

It says that it will immediately appear in the text box, and it doesn't. I copied and pasted the image properties to the text box, went to see if it worked, and it didn't.

I've noticed that most of DU's Avatar dimensions are 48x48

Is that the limit ?

And if the size is over 1k,

like 1.5k or 2k, will DU resize it, or will it just not work ?

and hmm, I just checked the size of the icon in your post,

and it's 1.49k, .. are we allowed a "wee" bit of leeway here ?

The software will automatically resize the dimensions only to 48x48, it will not resize the filesize, but it does seem to allow a little play-room in the 1k limit (a behavior I wasn't aware of before, and may be fixed at some time).

They only allow a finite number of downloads of each image per day. Most often, they 'red X' more than any image. Maybe try a new one? :-(
