but some people don't WANT to understand. "Understanding" requires process of thought, and unfortunately, WAY too many people don't want to have to think.
A few years ago, I got into it with a couple of black women. I was parked in my son's school parking lot, and the two women were standing behind my car. I got my son settled in the car, and then my infant son. The women were still standing there talking. I got in the car, started it, and put it in reverse. They still didn't move. So, I got out of the car and simply said "Excuse me - I gotta back my car out - could you move a little to the left or right?" They just looked at me. As soon as I turned to get back in the car, I hear "Cracker". I turned back around, and said "What did you just say?" And the one woman says "Just stating the obvious". Huh.
So I asked them both "What did I say or do that would cause you to react to me that way?" They said nothing.
So then I said "I don't know why you're thinking of me that way. I politely asked you to move so that I can get my car out. I have to take my baby to the doctor. How has this become a racial issue?"
The one woman answered "Ask your grandparents." WTF!!!!
So I said "Well, my grandparents are dead, so I can't ask them anything; what in the hell do my grandparents have to do with this?"
She says "They have EVERYTHING to do with how we look at people LIKE YOU."
I said "Well, I'm not sure how you can know who I am by my appearance, but my one set of grandparents came to the US from Poland in the 1930s, and the other set came to the US from Germany in the 1920s. My German grandmother was a servant to a wealthy family in Philadelphia, while my German grandfather delivered milk. My Polish grandmother wove rugs with a loom, while my Polish grandfather worked in the coalmines in PA, eventually being killed in a mine collapse. My German grandmother was raped by her boss when she was still a teenager. None of my grandparents finished school because they had to help support the family. They all had to work their tails off for everything they ever owned.
So you're telling me now, that you apparently knew my grandparents. This is interesting to me. What did my grandparents ever do to you, your parents, or your grandparents?"
The two women said NOTHING. They just stared at me.
So I know ALL TOO WELL what you're saying, SouthPaw. Because I am a white woman with long blonde hair and green eyes, in their minds I am someone, or part of someone, who took part in segregation and slavery. This level of gross generalizations is the very reason why biases of all kinds exist today.
