Explain Your DU Username!
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 02:42 PM by ih8thegop
I'd LOVE for the Admins to reespond to this thread! I don't know what their names mean!

Anyway...

A couple years ago, I was watching a rerun of “Home Improvement.” As you may know, Tim Allen’s character – the main character – was a host of a fictitious show called “Tool Time,” along with Al Borland (played by Richard Karn, who now hosts “Family Feud”).

On one episode of “Tool Time,” they were auctioning off classic cars for charity. To bid, Tim encouraged interested buyers to call 1-800-Z-CARZ-4-U (as in “The Car’s For You”).

One day a little while later, I thought, “You know, the DNC could use a good phone number like 1-800-I-H8-Z-GOP” (“I hate the GOP”).

It stuck in my mind, and I wanted to use it for my username on political discussion boards. However, I wanted a username that people would understand. I wasn't sure "ih8zgop" or "Ih8zGOP" would work as well as ih8thegop. It’s basically my generic username all over the internet.

Then I found DU, and the rest is history.

I write romance novels. In 1999, I tried to join yahoo as writer and then wryter. Both were taken. Yahoo suggested wryter2000, and I liked it.

21. Marsha Dimes! Virginia Hamm! Bertha Venation!
These are the names of drag queens from Harvey Fierstien's "Torch Song Trilogy."

The first time I took the name was in protest. I spent seven years with a GLBT/friendly chorus. One year our artistic director, who had to stick his grubby little fingers into every tiny little got-damned pie in the organization, decided that all chorus members' names must be printed along with our donors' in the program, to show that not only do we sing, but we support our group monetarily, too! Well, duh; any supporter of non-profit arts knows that the ones who put on the show chip in a good portion of the budget. But the fool insisted, and I protested by using a pseudonym that I knew the folks in the audience would get a kick out of.

I've been using it ever since, and I like it so much that I suggested to Mrs. V. that when we marry, instead of my taking her name (hers is much easier to spell, and mine means nothing to me), we should change our name to Venation. (I can't print what the look on her face said. ;))

24. Well, I thought "dave" wasn't specific enough.
But seriously, it's an attempt to get across the idea that i'm just some guy, a face in a crowd, nothing special, could be anybody, one of six billion. For most practical purposes, it doesn't matter who i am, one human's as good as another. We're all in this shit together, whether we like it or not, and there's no saying "it's them, they did it, not me" - WE are fucking up the planet, WE are fighting wars, and WE are allowing "leaders" to kill, and kill, and kill again.

Plus, everyone calls Arthur Dent "earthman". And i like sci-fi. And i'll start a sentence with "and" or "but" if i want to, so nyah. :)

Left over from graduate school; I was a grad assistant (of sorts) and shared a closet (our "office") with two other grads who also smoked at the time (yes, ah'm gettin' old <grin>). I was a pipe smoker, who liked latakia tobacco (Cypriot), and which generated a very thick smoke. The door of the closet (office) didn't seal very well, so smoke tendrils tended to leak out (especially UNDER the door).

Well, a couple of undergrads started calling the closet (office) "Smaug's Lair", and since I was the primary smoke generator <grin>, I began being known as "smaug." Ah, those less troubled times . . . .

I even had a logo of a rhino smoking a pipe that I sort of cobbled together to post on the door. I'll see if I can find it (old eps) and turn it into my avatar <big grin>.

This was fun remembering. Thanks!

I didn't realize it until after I registered and I saw someone with that screenname so I just kept it the way it was. I later found out that it was the name of an influential Spanish family.

Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 04:44 PM by Skittles
he was an injured, starving stray in Waxahachie Texas. A coworker of my boyfriend Tombo brought him to work and we took him to the vet. He had a pin in his leg for weeks but eventually blossomed into a 25 pound solid black bundle of feline love.

When I first came to the DU I felt like I was injured and starving too - for validation of my feelings that the country had been hijacked by a bunch of f***ing a**holes. I felt like I needed some "blossoming" too.

on edit - yes I did name Skittles after the candy. Back when I worked with Tombo he had a Dilbert candy machine on this desk I would stock with Skittles.

album when I was a kid, he did a joke with a character named Dr. Freddie, I loved it. Wilson had a way of looking at the serious out of the corner of his eye, and turning it on it's head.
Now, this is a deadly serious thing in which we are involved, but, sometimes a little levity is called for, so, I can be serious behind a mask of lightness. The 57 refers to my birthyear.

78. I have a cat named Skittles too
She's red and white and showed up in my backyard one day. She was very skittish and my son loved eating skittles, so hence the name.

118. Rhiannon was also my cat
The most social, intelligent cat I have ever known. Quite pretty, as well, and she surely knew it. I inherited her, and another cat, Angela, from my uncle when he died. His unpleasant wife was just going to drop them off at some shelter. I couldn't let that happen. Rhiannon (no one seemed to know her name, but this she took to "Rhiannon" immediately and it really suited her) was my bonus cat, since I already knew Angela, and I fell in love with her when she did this delicate little leap out of her carrier and into my life. I lost her in September of 2001, but still miss her everyday.;(

Rhiannon

56. the faerie queen of liberalism
I like faeries, the fey, wee folk, whatever you prefer to call them, and I have this book called "The Fairies" by Suza Scalora. There's a faerie in the book named Cedahlia, who is referred to as "the purveyor of peace and compassion." So in my mind, that makes Cedahlia the faerie queen of liberalism, which makes for a fitting DU username, dontcha think? O8)

That's her in my sig pic, by the way.

62. I first got on the web
In 1993, and worked in the entertainment industry. We were goofing one day and decided to create screen names that were a little obscure, but if you were in entertainment, you would understand.

To keep it short: when a film is being considered, and they're preparing the financing of it, there are what they call "Above the line" and "below the line" pay scales. Below the line would be standard type things, like all the crafts, union people, etc. Above the line would be the directors, actors, producers--the people who get the "big" bucks. One of the categories "above the line" is when the producer (or whatever) also is the director, or actor, or writer, or some other major function, and that person is a "hyphenate" to signify that he/she is wearing more than one hat on the production. So if you see an actor also billed as the director, the writer, the producer, or other some such luminary, he is known on that production as a "hyphenate." As a film student at one point, I was a writer and director, and that was my ultimate goal at that point in time.

It also helps that I majored in English in school, and helps excuse me when I'm a spelling or grammar nazi online. :)

Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 06:05 PM by flamingyouth
It was her breakthrough role, based on a book by Warner Fabian.

It was actually a pretty wild book for its day - it included premarital sex, tons of drinking and drugs and abortion. The movie toned it down a lot, but sadly it is lost to time, like so many silent films are.

97. The secret origin of screwfacecapone
Well for a while, I was know as jacknifedakilla when I posted on message boards (I still am too, if any of you check out yahoo). That nake came from when I first started rapping back in the 7th grade. Basically I was watching the old wwf with diesel and the jacknife powerbomb, and somehow that kinda stuck. WHen I went to high school, some class mates gave the name 'killa talley' (my last name) so the killa stuck with me. THere are actually a few stories of how I earned the 'killa'.

Now to screwface:
In my third year of college, I had begun to change my rhyme style to something more sophisticated and political, while still containing my edge, but I was confused on how. THen, I was watching marked for death, whose main villain was named screwface. I remembered the bob marley song of the same name, and I kinda named myself screwface. The capone part I just added on becuase it sounded so cool.

102. Obsessions...
With Alliterative names.
WW2 aircraft, especially 2nd rate ones.
The Battle of Britain.

Once upon a time, I posted on the MSN boards using my rank and last initial. I let out that I was active duty military, where I was stationed at the time, and what my job was. (This was in August of 2000). And some Freeper took offense that I not only did not support Bush, but I actively disliked him and his father, and voted for Clinton (twice) and intended to vote for Gore... So he used the information I had let out to find out who I was (using the base's website), and then emailed the base commander to report my 'treason'. I got called into the commanders office, and was told he didn't care what my politics were, but I should be more careful hiding my identity so that nutcases (his word!) wouldn't stalk me.

So, I picked a new nom-de-net...

I used to play a role-playing game called 'Space Opera'. The other players set up the usual marines, pilots, and psi characters... and I set up a starship technician. I used a loophole in the rules to max out my blaster skill to a level that could not be matched by any other character class. So, here I am, this techie who's a better shot with my pistol than any of the marines... and to make it even worse, I named him "Hawker Hurricane". So, when I looked for a new nom de net, I used HawkerHurricane.

Count yourself lucky I didn't use LockeedLightning, DouglasDauntless or SupermarineSpitfire.

I went on 'alittlelark' (as my grandma used to say). Within 4 months I had swallowed the little blue pill of reality.

124. I like Gung Fu...
or Kung Fu as it is known in North America, I've been a student in White Crane style for about year and a half now. I've always loved Gung Fu films and t.v shows. I also have found that many of the lifestyle and spiritual aspects of Gung Fu and other martial arts interest me greatly. One day I hope to open up my own school and teach others.

127. Selwynn
Selwynn was the name of a character in a story I was writing when I was in junior high. I spent endless ammount of time on it, and wrote nearly fifty pages of this elaborate cross-genre fantasty type story. I drew maps of the lands in carefull detail on brown paper, and burned the edges to make them look old and worn - I had a complete outline for an entire journey across these lands..

But I was yound and 50 pages was about all I had in me. Plus, I'm sure that the story was pretty lame. :D

Anyway, I thought I invented the name Selwynn, until I saw it other places and found out that selwyn is some kind of british name or thing or something. I was kind of depressed. I use selwynn as my online identity most places, and generally give that name for most anything I can get away with.

Sel

132. Silas Soule
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 04:49 AM by SilasSoule
the pic in my avator (formerly sigline) is that of Captain Silas Soule (He's wearing a civil war union uniform). A truly forgotten hero in U.S. history that my DU name is in honor of. As a Masachusetts abolitionist working with the Underground railroad, he orchestrated several rescue and breakout attempts including that of one Fredrick Douglas. HE later became a Union officer and was sent West during the last years of the Civil war to fight the Indian Wars.

There was a massacre of a Cheyenne village of mostly women and children at Sand Creek Colorado on November 29th 1864 led by a bloodthirsty Colonel named Chivington, Captain Soule was under his command. Soule directed his men to stand down, hold their ground and to "not" participate in the blood letting, while carnage was all around them. People were shocked at the savagry used the U.S. Army at Sand Creek and in the aftermath of the massacre body parts were put on public display in Denver. An investigation ensued and Captain Soule was in forefront of giving testimony that what Chivingtion did was outright murder. Before the inquest ended he was shot and killed by one of Chivington's men. He was 34 years old. Some historians credit this event at Sand Creek for the shift in Indian policy from complete annihaltion of a people to a "containment in reservations" doctrine and thus attribute Soule with potentially saving countless of Native American lives.

133. Well I named myself after August Ferdinand Mobius
The concept of infinity and time folding in on itself in regards to how it relates to karma has always fascinated me. To me, the Mobius Strip symbolizes balance, harmony and justice, the ultimate means to an end. Karma does not bode well for the "me first/republicans" of this country. Balancing the space time continuum, would seem to logically require that humanity must evolve by becoming more compassionate, honest and just society.

Is, now get this, Supernova, spelt backwards and was the name of my Character when i used to play Anarchy Online (omg my guild was full of freepers, I still remember arguing about the Iraq war just before it started, talk about a gang rape) it was all I could think of off the top of my head as I had a free sample of the game and didn't intend to keep it after the one week expiry date.

I was going for "LoneWolf." Which was not assigned to anyone at that time. It bounced back at me 3 or 4 times, so I took out the "one" and it worked.

LoneWolf because I've been one all of my life.

I thought about changing it when DU changed over last summer, but was too lazy to come up with something new in the end.

Also, I'm from Alabama, so the "south" part has added meaning.

Come to think of it, I have children, so, in southern parlance, that makes me a "paw", right.

Shit, my screen name is more significant than I ever knew.

No, I am not a Bush fan.

It was actually inspired by Half-Life.

In that game there is an alien world called Xen, which is totally fraggin weird and not at all zen, peaceful or normal.

Thus after 9-11 when I realised that it was the Reichstag all over, alot of my friends were against me and totally freeped out, I came here.

And everythingsxen... meaning nothing is right or normal or peaceful..

Well some things are now... :D
