1. Id say two periods together
1948-1973.

Everything seemed possible during that time....people thought progress was being made on alot of fronts, and alot of folks became impatient that it was being made fast enough.

Although there was alot of protests and also riots, it was also a fairly optimistic period.

And the standard of living was pretty good for a hell of a lot of folks who wouldn't see that same standard of living nowadays...sort of a golden age.

Liberal-humanist progressivism was the driving force (despite party affiliation), but then John Birchers, Orange County crazies, and cracker racists somehow became "mainstream" What in the hell happened?

2. There are good things and bad things about all eras
The age of corporate greed and widening income inequality makes the past twent years or so not a good era even though the Clinton years were good for many people. The Vietnam years were not good for obvious reasons but there were advances in liberal movements. Something died in the American spirit when the Kennedys and Dr. King died. Before their era, many families lived well, meaning middle class, but sexism was more prevelant than ever with women unable to have professional careers even if they were trained and performed during the war. I would not describe was as part of a good era. Between the two World Wars there was the growth orf corporate greed and then the Depression. I think there was never a picture perfect eera in America.

4. Right after the "Freedom of Information Act" was passed
The public finally got transparency from their government. Then along came 9/11 and the rollback started.

7. You can't really answer that
because each era was best for a different group. What was the best era for the wealthy was not the best era for the working class. The best era for women of color was not the best era for wealthy bankers, and so forth.

For myself, the best years of my life are right now, despite the horrors of politics. It's the first time in my life I'm not crippled by severe depression. There are depressing, horrible things coming from Washington, but this time, it's not causing me to seek to eat a .45.
