Girl Scout cookie sales soggy in sliding economy
By JIM HAUG
Staff Writer

DAYTONA BEACH -- Girl Scout cookie sales crumbled under the weight of a sagging economy.

"You could spend $3.50 on a gallon of gas or a box of cookies," explained Rosie Miller, vice president for the Girl Scouts of the Citrus Council, which includes Volusia County.

Girl Scout cookie sales in Volusia County were down 8,700 boxes compared to last year, a loss of $30,450.

Sales in Flagler County declined by 2,340 boxes, a loss of $8,190, according to the Girl Scouts of the Gateway Council, based in Jacksonville ...

2. Well, lets start with the obvious
They are the most overpriced cookies you can buy. Every year the price goes up and the box gets smaller. I'd almost rather just write the Girl Scouts a check because it feels like I am getting so little for the money.

4. Buy 5 boxes, eat them in a week, and you'll get a lot...
of blubber from eating all those cookies.

It's possible more people are trying to eat healthier too...

6. Bingo
$4.50 for 12 cookies that are not that great, well... I'm with you on just donating the money directly.

8. True enough -- but I think I'll always spin this as "Bush's war economy hurts girls scouts"

10. That's a good idea.
However, the money you donate would go to the council itself which does need operating money, but the cookie sale generates the funds for the TROOPS to operate. That money allows girls who might not otherwise be able to afford it the means to join in troop trips, projects and activities that dues just don't cover. In addition, individual girls can earn 'camperships' to help pay for summer activities.

If you do decide to just donate, find a troop in your area and donate the money to the troop, not just the council. Or, better yet, sponsor a troop. It doesn't mean putting out a lot of money...membership dues for yourself, maybe some craft supplies or helping find a speaker on a topic the troop is working on, or giving some time to help out with the troop.

3. A box of oreos costs less and you get many more of them.
Simple economics.

That or more girls have the audacity to hit puberty, grow up, leave the scouts...

or people are whining the cost went up while the size and quantity of cookies went down...

I mean, offshoring taught us all to expect more for less. Not the other way 'round. :wow:

7. Hmph. I gave $7 cash to an adorable little door-to-door grifter 2 months ago,
and I still don't have any cookies. Next time--pay when they are delivered.

11. That's the way it's supposed to work.
Sorry you got scammed. But the official policy is that money is NEVER to be collected when the order is taken, only when the cookies are delivered. You need to report the troop (their cookie manager probably overstepped bounds...probably didn't attend the training) to your local council.
