Tribute to Buddy Guy - my hero
Just watched Buddy playing on Austin City Limits with John Mayer, bringing back a flood of memories... Not only is he the greatest Blues guitarist ever, but an even finer man. I was fortunate to see him play a small club and meet him in 1988, and the man simply radiates warmth, integrity, pride, humility, truth, and love of life.

Like so many Blues musicians of his era, early on he endured the blatant racism of 1940's Mississippi and Chicago, his talent in forced obscurity until the young white "stars" popularized Blues into the 1960's mainstream culture. Even then the true masters and pioneers still heard the big cheers and saw the full houses go to Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix (who was the first to tell you "I got my shit from Buddy Guy").

To this day, the man has never chosen bitterness or resentment, living every day in understanding and love. Would that I could genuinely embrace those who have attempted to oppress or marginalize me, winning over legions through an exemplary life.

I love you Buddy!

2. STFU - excuse me?
Not exactly the response I expected for a tribute to a living example of love. Care to expound?

5. I guess that's what the "alert" button is for...
though I've never seen fit to use it.

jpgray - glad to hear from someone who gets back to the great Chess records. Wish I hadn't sold all my vinyl, with not only Buddy but Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Willie Dixon, etc. On most of those recordings Buddy was just a session player, but he's sure outlasted everyone.

9. Buddy is one of the most important influences
in my own guitar style. I was just playing along to "Damn right I got the blues" last night. I have made the pilgrimage to his club "Legends" in Chicago and I have also seen him play live at the House of Blues, one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. Thanks for the tribute thread (although you had me worried for a second, I thought he might have passed away!)

11. I saw Buddy about three years ago.
He was with BB King's blues tour. It was actually my first intro to Buddy, and damn he was good. Extraordinary, actually.

12. Just bought a Buddy Guy cd last night. Listening to Crawling
Kingsnake.

Tell you what is fascinating in my limited mind. Robert Johnson, the great Mississippi Bluesman, was an itinerant musician, left as his record a couple of recording sessions and a couple of photographs; died, either from the complications of syphillis or poisoned by a jealous husband, and we don't really know where he is buried. Somewhere around Greenwood Mississippi.

Yet, the legacy of this man is extraordinary. Kind of like the Mozart for the blues world.
