Just witnessed a HUGE fire

Apache Land movie set in Arizona (Gold Canyon ~40 mile east of Phoenix). Many old movies and TV western were filmed there (Have Gun Will travel, The Rifleman).

In just a few minutes almost the entire "town" was destroyed. I can't tell yet how many buildings survived. I can still see the church. There were a number of tourist shops there and a nice restaurant/bar.

The good news is that there were reportedly no serious injuries. We were very concerned since Saturday night is usually fairly busy there and the fire spread very quickly.

1. Reminds me of...

A Burt Reynolds movie that was filmed here in Tuscaloosa in the late seventies when I was a little kid. "Hooper." They destroyed an old hospital where they had kept German pow's during WWII. My mom took me out there to watch filming. Those buildings blew up real good...

2. I remember that movie - and watching a documentary on it

especially that one scene, and how it was truly a one-take deal, and the preparation they did to make sure that it all worked.

I'll always remember that tall tower falling down.

I haven't seen that movie since it was in the theater, but for some reason, I think about it a lot.

And I'm not even a Burt Reynold's fan, and I was 12 when it came out. No wait - I must have been 13, because I was able to walk to the theater.

I remember, of course, the big scene at the end that we've discussed. And I remember him driving in reverse on the highway. That was cool. And I also totally remember him sliding under the semi, which totally freaked me out because the reason I mention being able to walk is that I was hit by a semi the summer before the movie came out, and spent many months not being able to walk...

but, not surprisingly, I don't have any idea about the plot or the storyline of the movie AT ALL, and I would tend to believe that, like a lot of movies of the 70s, it really didnt' have a plot per se, except as any "plot" helped to bridge action scenes.

But I LOVED Smokey and the Bandit, and really want to get that on DVD. What a great movie!

6. I saw the documentary before I saw the movie

though maybe not documentary in the technical sense. Might have been a Showtime special. Who the &@*^# knows? I don't, but it was a show, on TV, about the making of Hooper.
