but he is also right there where he can shop, have services he needs, doctors, and a decent hospital if he needs it.

My father lives in an island community and trips to the doc are all day events because of the ferry schedule. Fortunately there is a public health nurse on the island most of the time and that allows him and the other old farts the chance to stay put until they're seriously ill.
