1. *BSD instead.
Easier to maintain, better engineering.

nuff said.

2. Some things to consider...
I haven't had a chance to really get a Linux system up and running yet. However, I've always thought RedHat would be a good choice if you're a website designer because it's the standard on webservers.

On the other hand, I don't think RedHat is free any more. More disturbing, I think I read that some bigwig - a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff? - is now on RedHat's board of directors.

There may not be a problem, but you know Microsoft is trying its best to infiltrate the open-source movement. Just something to think about.

3. Mandrake -

But I agree with the BSD vote, too :) FreeBSD is damned nice - add a KDE frontend, and ooooh momma!

edit: forgot the "and why"

Granted, I haven't looked at RH in awhile, but the Mandrake guys have done an EXCELLENT job, and the installs sure are a lot easier than they used to be. It's a pretty tight little system.

4. SuSE!
The Pro version comes with every conceivable program. At $70-$80, it's also less expensive than the competing distros (though feature per feature, Mandrake is #2.)

Novell also bought out SuSE anlong with Ximian (Linux GUI), meaning future incarnations of SuSE should be very interesting...

5. thanks

I was about to post that as well.
:hi:

Edit:
This thread is highly dangerous; potential for a Mandrake vs. Red Hat vs. SuSe AND a Linux vs. BSD Flamewar.

At least it's not yet FreeBSD vs. OpenBSD...

6. No need for it to degrade into a flamewar...
I was just asking which of the two, i.e., RH or Mandrake would best suit an
"average" user's needs. Ease of use...installation, etc. Which one performs
best?
Thx for the posts thus far.

7. really, either one is fine....
Although I asume you realize that RH is no longer issuing non-enterprise distros. Their sort-of-progeny the Fedora Project has issued Fedora Core 1 (which is what I'm currently using). I like it.

Edited on Sat Feb-14-04 07:45 PM by Don_G
The golf game and poker game I like are Micro$haft products as well as the Office Package I use.

On Edit: Dell 2.66 MHz Notebook w/nVida Geo-Force Card and a 60 MB HD.

10. Wait.
Wait for the Mandrake 10.0 "Community" edition which will be out very soon. 2.6.2(possibly .3) kernel, KDE3.2 and lots of other Linuxy goodness.

Well, well, well worth the little wait. It is free and downloadable by ftp or Bit Torrent.
