But I'd most enjoy one of those elegant ones from forties and fifties movies, with a dining and observation car and sleeping compartments. I've traveled by trains in Europe, and those are fine, particularly since the rocking motion quickly puts me to sleep (boats do the same thing). Without a sleeping berth I'm prone to waking up with odd cramps in my neck and limbs, though, so for me Amtrak only works for medium-length trips of under eight hours.

We used to have decent Amtrak service to South Florida, but they closed the nearest station, and run the trains a lot less frequently. Now it's such a hassle I don't bother.
