Two songs that actually make me feel some patriotism
not nationalistic fervor mind you, but good nostalgic patriotism...

American Remains - the Highwaymen

City of New Orleans - Willie Nelson

2. Ah yes, best version ever. Should be played instead of the Nat'l anthem
before all sporting events.

5. I actually like the Star Spangled Banner
But then I'm from Maryland. And I put it into context, I mean WE were the small, weak nation and the Brits were the World's Hyperpower when it was written.

But, City of New Orleans brings chills to me

I also remember July 4, 1993 at the Washington Monument Grounds as the fireworks were going off, the loudspeakers were playing US Blues by the Grateful Dead and I thought, "They FINALLY think I'm an American too."

Battle Hymn of the Republic is a goodie too.

6. SSP is an old drinking melody and is hard to sing and is
butchered nearly every time it is sung. But I get your sentiment.

10. I have --
Though in a very bitter, ironic mood at the time. I thought I sounded really good -- though whether other people thought so, not so sure! Sing that song, think lofty, painful thoughts, after drinking a few pints -- very rousing, yes. A real tearjerker...

11. LOL...the only time I would try to sing the SSB...
is when I was drunk! That is one tough song. I still think there are some great versions of it though, Whitney Houston's version was near perfection.

Most people never realize that the first three verses have the last line as a question as to whether Ft McHenry would still have the Banner waving, only in the fourth verse, is it finally established that the Banner still waves.

OK enough history trivia.

I have found many pieces of music that have made me feel patriotic;

SSB
Battle Hymn of the Republic
When Johnny Comes Marching Home
Stars and Stripes Forever

But I would have to say, the one that gets to me more than any other, and is more reflective than patriotic, is Taps. There is just something about that mournful bugle in the distance. Probably because I have heard it so many times, at so many funerals and military events that it has such an effect on me, but it brings out some of the most profound emotions in me, topped by pride and sorrow. In some ways, I wish I would never have to hear it again, but the pride I have for my fellow vets, keeps me going to every funeral I can for my fellow service members, past and present.

14. Here are the lyrics
Edited on Sat Feb-14-04 08:34 PM by NightTrain
Oh well, oh well, I feel so good today.
We just touched ground on an international runway.
Jet propelled back home from overseas to the U.S.A.

New york, Los Angeles, oh how I yearned for you.
Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton rouge.
Let alone just to be at my home back in ol’ St. Lou.

Did I miss the skyscrapers, did I miss the long freeway?
From the coast of California to the shores of Delaware Bay.
You can bet your life I did 'til I got back in the U.S.A.

Looking hard for a drive-in, searching for a corner café.
Where hamburgers sizzle on an open grill night and day.
Yeah, and a juke-box jumping with records back in the U.S.A.

Well, I’m so glad I’m livin’ in the U.S.A.
Yes, I’m so glad I’m livin’ in the U.S.A.
Anything you want, we got right here in the U.S.A.
