Just got a new Mac G5 in this week.
It's a dual-1.8 GHz G5. Yes, it's blazing fast, especially compared to my old 800MHz G4. But you know what the best thing about it is?

It's sooooooooooo quiet!

This is really important to me because I work at home and the constant drone of computer fans really bothers me. In my old G4 I had 2 video cards and I didn't realize how noisy the old PCI Radeon card was. Now, with the new computer (and plugging both displays into one card), the thing is so quiet I can't even hear it unless I stick my ear next to it. Yet I can put my hand in front of all the little holes and feel plenty of air being sucked in. It's amazing that putting MORE fans into the case makes it quieter.

1. yes
I've silenced my PC (yes, you can get those silent too), and it'S certainly worth it.
For the smaller Radeon cards I can recommend those:

Passive VGA coolers, together with a good case, a silent PSU, silent CPU Fan and a good HDD suspension = silence :-)

2. Oooooh!
Nice.
My G4 is much quieter than the suped up Dell I used at work. When I turned it off at the end of the day my ears said thank you. The drive also made a racket.

3. I've heard that one of Steve Job's personal pet peeves is...
...noisy computers.

And what Mr. Jobs wants, Mr. Jobs gets (at Apple, anyway). Fortunately for Mac users, he has very good taste!

:)

4. Sweet!
Myself, I'm waiting for the G5 PowerBooks this Fall to replace my old G4 PowerBook.

Congrats!

5. It's amazing how they did it
By using a bunch of fans, having each fan be larger and low speed, and by having them be computer controlled (with I think 21 temperature sensors in the case), it only turns the fans on high when it really needs it (which apparently is not very often). Occasionally, when playing games, the video card area will heat up and the fan will kick on, but that's about it.

And I've heard the same thing about Steve and his aversion to noise. The original Mac had no fan at all, and when the Mac SE came out, he was most upset that the engineers couldn't do it without a fan.

6. The CRT iMacs have no fan
And the G4 'Cube' had no fan, too.

What's really cool is that they actually work using convection. If you put your hand above the vents on a CRT iMac, you can feel hot air blowing out (gently) even though there is no fan.
