Poll question: I just performed surgery on myself. Am I insane?
I got a little growth on my tongue a couple years back, where my tongue was rubbing a rough part of my tooth. I got the tooth fixed, but the polyp never went away. Sometimes it was very annoying.

It would have been a hassle to have a doctor do it so I chopped it off myself with a well-disinfected set of nail clippers!

It seems to be doing fine so far, very little pain or bleeding.

1. Other. And get AlienGirl to tell you
all about the joys of the oral cancer she's battled. Maybe a doc should take a look at what you've done, just to be safe.

5. A doc has seen it before I whacked it.
He said it looked benign. Now you've made me worry a bit, tho.

7. Did anyone see the ending of Nip/Tuck where that kid.....
Eww, anyways. Wow, brave guy to take a pair of nail clippers to your own tongue, and if you've survived this long, I think you are in the clear.

And what is with that kid anyway, how old is he supposed to be? He looks 30 and he has a pretty good five o’clock shadow going.

12. lol, that was my initial thought!
I think my husband's done that (skin tag removal, not vasectomy) and has survived.

13. You beat me to it.
Yes, I did exactly this to remove a couple of skin tags on my neck. They were small, and didn't bleed much at all. I soaked the clippers in alcohol for 10 minutes beforehand, swabbed the region with alcohol, and immediately applied Neosporin and a Bandaid afterwards. (And I took a couple of shots of bourbon to make sure everything was sanitised internally, as well.)

No scar, no trace of the tags.

I have a couple of larger ones, which I'd prefer to have removed professionally.

16. Trepanning
Bunch of hooey.

But then again, people who trepan probably need another hole in their head, so the rest of their brains can leak out.

10. Did you get enough
Ahknaten just had surgery for a cancerous somethingorother on his nose and had to have it re-done because they didn't trim enough good tissue as a barrier.

11. Eh, you'll be fine.
The tongue is a very resilient muscle. But did you even once get to use the "stippled, for your pleasure" line that goes so perfectly with benign lingual nodules?

19. wise move
It is really remarkable how much we can doctor ourselves if we want or have to.

14 years ago I had a C-section. Did the delivery downstate with family etc. Came back home "up north" got infection in incision. No doctor, no money, plenty of intestinal fortitude, tolerance for pain and determination though, and voila!! All better!! (I'll spare you the gruesome details)

Don't get me started on how to lance and drain one's own abcess tooth....haha

20. I have
I removed a small, but bigger than a zit, growth on my arm about six years ago. The only thing that remains from it is a small white spot.
