1. I would like to suggest that you go listen to some pre-1986 music
I'm glad you are into some of the great bands - Pink Floyd, Genesis, and so forth. But I notice that you seem to know only their more recent, and not as good, music.

Learning to Fly is okay, but nowhere near their greatest - they had much better music before, AND, IMO, Division Bell was a Much better album than Momentary Lapse of Reason.

Check out their albums Animals, Saucerful of Secrets, and Wish You Were Here.

15. Wish You Were Here is a great song.
It edges out Learning to Fly and Comfortably Numb by a bit.

As far as Genesis goes, I love all their music, but Lamb is astounding.

best pink floyd song is a tough one, but I'm thinking 'Arnold Lane' has got a pretty good shot for it.

12. THAT's my kind of Floyd
My band sometimes warms up with a really shitty version of "Interstellar Overdrive". Barrett-era Floyd is sublime. The rest ain't too bad either.

14. Too cool!
One time I was hanging out with one of my friends (who doesn't listen to Floyd), and for some reason or another I was singing a couple of lines from "Bike," and he thought I was making it up. :P Early Floyd stuff is just so cool, and it doesn't get nearly enough attention, IMO. (Of course, I love Roger Waters and the lyrics & music of later Floyd as well, but Barrett's work just had an otherworldly feel to it, you know?) :hi: Peace.

20. I agree, but not all of their earlier stuff
The first few albums I think were really great, especially the barrett ones, but I think some things like 'atom heart mother' and 'meddle' are just bad. And, sin of sins, I don't like 'dark side of the moon'. I think I liked it at one time maybe, but it's such a cultural icon, I can't listen to it as a piece of music anymore. I still think 'animals' is great though.

Their Live 8 performance, even at their old age, was quintessential.

:hi: I love how Nick Mason throws/drops one of his sticks at one point, and just picks up another one like nothing happened and keeps going. Never misses a beat. :D

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 08:43 PM by irkthesmirk
but, when he did that, he seemed to be totally in control. I love all Floyd but especially the older stuff!

...for the stunning guitar. It may be her favorite song of all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ioavsW0tgI

I tend to prefer the older stuff, but it would be hard to pick one favorite.

26. Don't laugh at this
But I always loved "Mother."

If just to hear someone sing, "Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls?" And the Sinead O'Connor version is both beautifully powerful and disturbing hearing her sing that line.

Oh and the killer guitar work.

32. Wish You Were Here
Wonderful, beautifull,and sad.

But I love The Wall. Sad story, but true. When I was young, my father would take me to his bedroom. With all the lights off. (Sounds like an episode of Nancy Grance.) But he would sit me beside him, play the album and cry. So that entire album has a great deal of emotion for me.
