Just a small pet peeve

Does every incident or potential scandal have to be labelled with "gate" at the end? I've read here about "Pastorgate" and now I'm reading about "passportgate". The Watergate scandal had, at its beginnings, a break-in at a building called the Watergate. That was perfectly acceptable, since it was accurate. But, come on. This attaching the word "gate" when referrring to a scandal or situation is really sort of tired. In my opinion.

6. Actually, "gate" as a suffix to mean "scandal" has been in OED for a decade or more.

So, it's now an official part of the language.

It went in soon after Iran-gate.

Like the eponymous scandal is just a gateway to more dirt. That was at least true of Watergate but I agree that it's overused.
