Jerk Store: A Confession
It's been twenty years since my last confession. Here it is.

I'm generally a nice guy. In my work life, I write densely theoretical articles and other scholarship that is careful, highly qualified, and collegial to a fault. If I disagree with others in my field, even where the stakes are high, I take a very soft approach, and rarely - if ever - launch frontal attacks. If I don't like a book, I don't review it. If I don't like an article, I'll place my reservations in the subordinate clause, leaving the main clause for the positive. I rarely get into arguments at conferences that are anything other than respectful. To my students, I am kind probably even beyond proper limits. Sometimes they're just gaming me, because they know I'm "soft," but I don't really like the disciplinary role, and so I choose not to play it (grading is another story - there, not so soft). Among my colleagues, I suppose I'm considered an alright guy. I don't really go for department intrigues, though I'll engage in minor gossip when drinking. I don't think I'm known as a troublemaker. In fact, I wouldn't believe it if you told me.

At home, I'm giving, patient, and generally pleasant. My wife and I haven't ever really been in a knock-down drag out fight, and I can't remember a time when an argument we did have wasn't resolved within the hour. To my daughter, I am doting. In fact, I'm so permissive and sweet that I'll have to start fortifying myself for other tactics now that she's two (today!).

Helluva confession, right? Here's the kicker.

On DU, I am a total fuck-faced jerk. I deliberately seek out arguments with people I vehemently disagree with, and it is my goal to slay them utterly with words. I will use any tactic, no matter how vile, to destroy their argument, salt it over, and let it fester. I've had more posts deleted than I like to count. I'm probably on over 100 ignore lists, and rightly so. People have sent me threatening and outraged IM's, which make me laugh maniacally. I consider it a good session if I have completely and publicly belittled my opposition in the eyes of other readers. I mock posters unmercifully for minor kicks. I consider DU not so much a community as a gladiator pit. Sure, I'm cool (and even very cool) with some folks here, but usually I'm in search and destroy mode. I try to find the softest argumentative and emotional underbelly of my interlocutors and exploit it extensively. I'm accusatory, condescending, and crude. I harp on shit, like the Red Sox payroll, just because the outraged responses are amusing. I call my wife over and say "Look how mad this guy is!" And she laughs and says "You're such a jerk!" I devise ingenious work-arounds that allow me to insult people without breaking DU rules on personal attacks. I proceed by innuendo, sarcasm, double entendre, parody, satire, and cold reasoning. I take the tools of the trade I learned in academic argument and apply them in ways that would horrify Callicles. In short, I'm an asshole. And I love it.

So, why the disconnect? Why nice here, asshole there? Of course, there's the anonymity bit that all the internet theorists talk about. But I think it's also like a little safety valve.

You're expecting a sarcasm smiley? You're not going to get one. This is a confession. This is the truth. In The History of Sexuality, Foucault tells a story about a Serb who wanted to join the partisans to fight against the Nazis. He found some group of resistance fighters, but they were worried about infiltrators, so they told him to go away and come back with a written version of his life story. He leaves for two days, writes four densely packed pages of prose, then finds the group again. The partisan leader looks at it, reads it over, and says "Write it again, but this time tell the truth." This is the truth. The jerk store called, and they're running out of me.

"Why nice here, asshole there?"

Don't you mean, "Why asshole here, nice there?"

You really should make sure you type what you mean!

On another note, why do enjoy hurting people?

There are real people behind all the posts here.

Just sayin'.

Otherwise, I don't remember you fucking with me but then again, I may have been fucking with you!

May I suggest coordinating smears on the opponent of your favored primary candidate. Unless you begin this, you really have only the weakest claim to the title of asshole. I can think of several posters over there who would laugh at your claim.

No big deal, IMO. Especially since what you wrote implies that you understand a fundamental truth that far too many people here don't understand: DU isn't real, and has no bearing or importance on the world stage.

But as was said up-thread, there are real people posting here, even if you can't see them. Personally, I can't understand the desire to consciously choose to be an asshole to anyone for the fun of it, but that's me.

39. I don't care either way anymore
there are so many people now that are so wrapped up in their own desires to the point of being delusional, that I find it hard anymore to be concerned about them. I find it hard to discuss anything with them either. This may be why I don't post as much anymore.

Something to ponder: If you feel better splitting your personality into two distinct flavors, it's quite possible neither place is getting the full, authentic a_m experience. And we on DU aren't the ones being short-shafted.

You are (if we take you at your word! :P ) a genuinely nice fellow out there in the fleshy world. You need an outlet. Some people drink themselves into a coma. Others obsess over one hobby or another. Others scream at people on the Internet. And you, my friend, are a screamer.

I have found that most people who affect an "Alter Ego" and claim it is different than their TRUE persona usually have the two reversed.

As to online vs offline personality: with me, what you read is what you get. Lying is a bad habit to get into, besides being immoral. It's always easier to keep the truth straight.

Beautiful eyes. If personality is inherited, PRAY that child is secretly the mailman's.

Sincerely,

One of your periodic victims.

Get away with it, not get away with it. It seems beside the point. I don't play basketball with my work colleagues either, but it's not because I think they would beat me in basketball. It's just something I do with a different group.

If I lose in basketball, I just lose. Try better next time. Work on the jump shot, etc. Same thing here.

If lack of recourse is built in, then it's neutralized as a factor. Or rather, it's just part of the playing field.

I guess one of the reasons I started this thread is that I'm not entirely satisfied with the standard answers (lack of consequences, anonymity, safety valve for bad personality traits, etc.). They may be right, and there are certainly no end of studies saying just that. But it seems a bit superficial to me. I think perhaps flame warring is pleasurable not for any hidden psychological reasons or compensations, but for the same reason that something like running, or knitting, or painting is pleasurable: the activity itself. That flame warring involves other people is accidental, or perhaps necessary in the same way you need other people in a marathon.

Who knows. Maybe all those studies are right and I'm wrong.

you then decide to 'accuse' me of being a stripper and changing my profile, and other crazy paranoid accusations: that puts you in asshole-land.

Honest people know that they are performing either way. Some have just nailed down one performance that works, and so they don't think it's a performance anymore.

31. Maybe I just enjoy the kinds of arguments here as an interesting game
or a fun puzzle.

I'm not convinced that the thing is more psychologically profound than that. Some people like knitting, not because it "makes them feel better about themselves," but simply for the joy of the activity. Why couldn't argument be the same? In ancient Greece, rhetorical training went hand-in-hand with physical training in the gymnasiums. Couldn't it just be that it's a pleasurable sport?
