Who are 3 current TV chefs you like, and 3 you dislike
For my list I included only those who do cooking on TV (so no Bourdain).

Like:

Lidia Bastianich - quirky presentation but wonderful food and she KNOWS what she's doing
Jamie Oliver - not the most expert but he loves the food and it shows
Ina Garten - Not a classic chef but I like her approach to entertaining and feeding - and bonus points for being so gay-friendly

Dislike:

Giada - she's not toxic, but I consider her a marketing gimmick rather than a real chef
Ming - I wanna know who is bankrolling this guy because he seems to be without a clue
Rachel Ray - predictable, I know - almost gave it to Emeril though

Honorable mention for likes to those no longer in production - Julia, Pierre

7. Here are mine:
Like:

Giada- I like her food and admire her passion
Ina- She really knows how to throw a party and I also like the fact that most of her friends seem to be gay
Bobby Flay- He seems really down-to-earth for someone with a lot of talent and influence.

Dislike:
Rachael Ray- Though I like her personally and admire her rags-to-riches story, she has been overexposed by the Food Network
Jamie Oliver- I like him personally, too but his food just doesn't appeal to me.
Paula Deen- Love her and her two boys but she has been overexposed just like Rachael Ray

8. I'm putting Alton Brown on my DISLIKE list. That's right, you heard me.
I know everyone here is all pro-Alton and everything, but he annoys me. :P

Also on my dislike list:
-- Bobby Flay. Egomaniac.
-- Sandra Lee. Her food looks disgusting and I can't stand the way she coordinates her kitchen for each show. And ... Tablescape? Please.

Likes:
-- Ina Garten. The woman likes her butter, sour cream, cream cheese, and cream. I wouldn't cook like that, but it's fun to watch someone else do it. Same with Paula Deen.
-- Giada. All her food looks tasty (except for the red meat, which I don't eat).
-- Nigella what's-her-name. Like her accent and her attitude and the way she cooks.
-- Jamie Oliver. The food looks incredible, and he's got more energy than a squirrel on speed.

9. I accidentally dissed Bobby Flay some years ago.
I was helping someone who had a booth at the NY fancy food show -- this was pre Food Network, so I didn't know who Bobby Flay was.

He came up to the booth I was working and I thought he was another booth worker so I said something like "who are you working for" blah blah.

After he left I was told he was the guy whose name was all over the mega-multiple-display elsewhere at the show.

Oopsy!

10. I only have a total of three.
Likes: I hear Anthony Bourdain is going to cook in a new show, so he is one of my likes.

Ina Garten gives a lifestyle presentation, which is part of her appeal. She is smart with class and she cooks good food. I like her husband too.

Dislikes: As far as dislikes, Sandra Lee, as I have said before, I want to like her and I have tried, but I would be scared to eat with her. She had a tough life growing up and she and all that weird anal stuff is the product of sublimation.

I am sorry I don’t have three of each, I just feel mediocre about everyone else, I get excited to see Ina or Anthony and reach for the remote when those three dots appear.

11. Someone has to be the contrarian

Like:

Alton Brown: He's fun, he's educational -- he's like a home ec teacher on steroids

Rachel Ray: I'll grant she's overexposed, but she does show how to make some great food in 30 minutes. And she's friendly, and I consider her easy on the eyes.

Robert Irvine: I know.. I don't get to like him for much longer, but I like his attitude and watching him cook in stressful situations

I'll give an honorable mention to Sandra Lee: say what you will about her food, but her life story is pretty inspirational.

Dislike:

Anthony Bourdain: Arrogant, uninformative, and he's said really unnecessary and unkind things about Sandra Lee

Nigella: She's everything I don't like about Martha Stewart, only more so

Her name suddenly escape me, but the woman who does "Simply Delicioso" on FoodTV. Just Bad

I used to dislike Flay (who, oddly, I'm watching now), but he's mellowed, and I like him more since he's done "Throw Down"

44. Martin Yan is still around on PBS and he's actually gotten better...
He downplays all the silly showoff shtick that drove me crazy in the past. Today, his programs often feature other Asian restaurant chefs, overseas and domestic, and visits to Asian markets. All in all his program has become more informative than it used to be.

Faves:

James Martin--don't know if you get him hear--I was watching him overseas
Bobby Flay
Nigella

There were a lot of others on the BBC food channel that I liked more than I like most of the ones we get here. Also, their photography was absolutely the best.

21. Here's my list
Like:

Kylie Kwong - beautiful Asian chef with a full-blown Aussie accent. Gets a lot of recipes from her mom and adds a modern twist. Cooks with her mom on the show a lot.

http://home.discovery.com/fansites/kyliekwong/about.html

Tyler Florence - I just like the "ultimate" concept. He's hit or miss depending on the show.
Jamie Oliver - Seems "real" and honest, not putting on any kind of a front

Dislike:

Giada - appears to lack a single sincere bone in her body and the smile is too much
Bobby Flay - Smug effing punk
Paula Deen - Too much butter, too much mayo, and some very questionable business deals that are easily Googled.

Justin Wilson - cooked with feeling, not measurements.

Dislikes -
Emeril - sorry, nothing that guy cooks looks like I would eat it.
Bobby Flay - Gomer-ass hack.

like: Alton Brown, America's Test Kitchen folks and I'm really having a hard time coming up with #3

dislike: More than 3 but I'll confine myself to Sandra Lee, Bobby Flay and the dread Rachel Ray.

Honorable mention in the I LOVE HIM but he doesn't actually cook on TV: Anthony Bourdain. He's a love him or hate him kind of guy because he's mmm, let's say "vulgar." I think it's refreshing and I love the irreverence and snark. My ultimate fantasy would be to watch him judge Iron Chef or America's Next Top Chef (Or whatever that show is called). They'd have to edit the hell out of it though so it would probably lose a lot in the translation. Tony the Tiger, grrr!

28. I always liked Bourdain because he was such an antidote to all the happy marketing as TV approach.
His first series was okay. I've been really enjoying No Reservations because he seems so comfortable with his own voice, and I like the authenticity.

The Test Kitchen people leave me cold because they always seem to be about how something should be done to be technically properly cooked - but they seem so rarely to have any passion for the food. That was always my problem with Martha too.

30. I like them for that reason I guess
It's just really straightforward and they go a little bit into the science of why certain ingredients work but not to the extreme (or with comedic effect) of Alton. It's different from food porn in that we're seeing a very detailed description of technique rather than just watching someone throw stuff together and say Bam! You know what I mean? It's dry but informative. Actually though, I think Chris Kimball is an adorable dork and I think he'd be fun at a dinner party. Call me shallow :)

My theory is he has wealthy parents financing him - who else would????

I saw him doing sushi rolls, and he said if you do it such and such way the filling will be in the CENTER. So he did it and guess what - his sample WASN'T CENTERED!!!!

How bad do you have to be that in a pretaped show, in which you can keep re-taping until it's perfect, you STILL present a fucked up sample???

47. Yo! Lay off my classmate Ming already!
Ming Tsai was not only in the Class of '85, but in my residential college (at Yale, we wouldn't dream of calling them "dorms" :-) ), Saybrook. Not exactly being the most popular or social of Saybrugians, I did not actually know him... but boy, oh boy, could we ever have used him in the dining hall!! I even read about him opening the restaurant in Wellesley in the Class Notes section of the Yale alumni magazine.

P.S. George W. Bush '68 was NOT in Saybrook. He was in Davenport. :P

Paula Dean: THis woman has overcome so much in her life, and I find her hilarious and refreshing. She uses butter! How weird is that these days?

Dislike:
Giada: First of all, I don't trust a skinny female cook. Second of all, I have a hard time watching her. Her head is bigger than the rest of her body. Thirdly, her food is substandard.
Sandra Lee: She makes gross nasty food. And she's annoying.
Rachael Ray: She's everywhere, and she gets more annoying as time goes by.
