CONFESS!!!!!! Friday 13th Confession - what are you superstitious about??
Me, when I hear certain songs first thing in the morning I usually think something really good will happen that day.

About 2 weeks ago I woke up to one of those songs and latter that day I got good news from at work.

What are your superstitions that you believe in???

2. The number 9
I think it's an evil number an I will not live anywhere where the house number adds up to 9. I also will not fly on a plane if the flight number is 9 or adds up to 9.

3. My St. Christopher medallion
I have it on my keychain. After I had my car accident a few weeks ago, I noticed that the medallion had fallen off of the ring. Now I make sure it goes with me wherever I go.

That and the full moon. It does shit to people.

4. In the winter months, I seem to catch a cold on first or last day...
of the month -- like Jan. 31 or Feb. 1. It hasn't happened yet this year, but there's still Feb. 29-March 1.

I also pat my car on the dashboard and say hello every morning -- I want it to know it's appreciated!

5. Nothing really, BUT
I knew this girl when I lived in NYC...lovely girl, came from a HUGE Italian family. They lived in Brooklyn, and as much as it might sound bad to say, were a blueprint for the Italian stereotype. They were loud, melodramatic, boisterous, and always put enough food on the table to feed half of the city. They were a pure joy to be around.

Once when I had the pleasure of being invited to dinner, I accidentally knocked over they salt shaker, and didn't instantly toss some grains over my left shoulder. :o OH. MY. GOD. You would have thought I'd just cursed the name of the Pope. I thought her mother was gonna stroke out right there at the table, and I got *seriously* disgusted and alarmed looks from several other family members. I was so startled I grabbed the entire shaker and threw salt over my shoulder, just to calm everyone down. :D

The whole episode had such a profound effect on me, I NEVER let one single grain be spilled now without reflexively doing the ritual. :D

7. I'm not superstitious, but I did have one bad experience
on Friday the 13th many, many years ago. First off, I had a minor fender-bender auto accident. Then when I arrived at the office, I was brewing coffee and somehow managed to spill the whole boiling pot on me.

14. I'm not superstitious, knock on wood.
Trying to remember some of the superstitions I grew up with:

Black cats are bad luck. This one didn't make to much sense to me, since we almost always had one.

It was bad luck if you didn't hold your breath when passing a cemetery. I always wondered if this counted if you were passing some place like Arlington.

Opening an umbrella in the house was a major no-no.

Breaking a mirror brings 7 years of bad luck.

If you have an itchy palm, that means you're coming into some money.

If you feel a sudden chill, it means that someone is walking over your grave.

Being 3rd on a match is bad luck.

15. Seriously..
I don't walk under ladders (It has nothing to do with superstition and everything to do with common sense)

Same thing about 3rd on a match. AFAIK the 3rd on a match thing comes from (this is all heresay so, take it as you will, I am not actually gonna go look this up) 'Nam where supposedly lighting 3 cigarettes with one match was enough time for an enemy sniper to get a good bead on you and fire. *shrug* That's what a Vietnam vet told me anyway.

16. Now I've got Stevie Wonder's Superstition running through my head
oh well, at least it's a song I like.

I'm mostly superstitious about things I believe bring me good luck. Seeing Mt. Baker is one (because you only see it from where I'm at when it's really a clear day and the pollution's not bad, and those two things don't usually happen very often). Seeing treefrogs is another - and again, that's happening less and less frequently as amphibians succumb to increasing pollution levels. :-(

18. Ladders in the back of trucks!
I freak out if I see one and move immediately. Maybe not a superstition, just common sense.

Several years ago I was driving to Dallas from Denton on I-35. Ahead of me was a pickup truck with 2 ladders in back.

A little voice told me I should move over one lane "just in case."

A second later, both of those ladders came hurtling out of the back of that truck, and there was a highway pileup right behind me.

I never question it anymore, just automatically do it. It saved my life once.
