Why was the fat X-Wing pilot in Star Wars named "Porkins?"

Why was the fat X-Wing pilot in Star Wars named "Porkins?"
Cover me, Porkins! Then Porkins gets blown up.

So why that name? I doubt it is a coincidence that the only overweight pilot was named after the gluttonous barn-yard animal. Did his parents just know he was going to be fat? Did they hope he would and think the name would encourage him?
