2. If you relax around dogs
they might love you.
What happened to make dogs not like you?

16. NEVER RUN ...

NEVER run from a dog. They will ALWAYS chase you. Besides, they're WAY faster than you are.

I'd suggest getting to know a SMALLER dog. If they're too small to hurt you, you won't be afraid. Take it some nice meaty treats and it will get friendly with you pretty fast.

Seriously, dogs can literally smell fear. Unfortunately, fear and agression are almost the same emotion. So when you get tense, THEY get tense.

A similar problem is owners who's dogs are NEVER good around strangers or other pets. What happens is that the owner ANTICIPATES a bad situation. They stress over it and the dog picks up on that. So they assume that whoever is coming is BAD!!!!!

Other tips:
1) NEVER greet a dog by looking at it DIRECTLY in the eyes. That is an expression of dominance. Avert your eyes and make sideward glances.

2) Don't walk DIRECTLY towards the dog. This is rude in dog society. Walk at an angle. Feel free to circle. This is NOT a menacing gesture. It's good manners for dogs.

3) NEVER try to touch a dog you don't know on top of the head. This is VERY threatining gesture for a dog. It's an EXCELLENT way to get bitten. Besides, you wouldn't take well if I greated you buy grabbing your ears and rubbing YOUR head, would you.

4) Offer your hand and allow the dog to approach YOU. Let him take the last couple of steps. If he lets you, pet him under the chin and behind the ears, not ON TOP OF THE HEAD.

5) Take a knee to make the dog feel more at ease. Remember to avert your glance slightly.

17. I understand the fear that a bad encounter would bring, but "name not"
I hope someday you can spend time with some loving puppies or well-behaved and very loving adult family dogs like a lab or big ole golden retriever. Please don't think me patronizing for saying this, but I truly and sincerely feel sorry for people who don't like dogs. I know (and all dog lovers know) how very much they are missing and I really want everyone to be able to experience that joy.

Having said that, I'm really sorry you had such a bad experience (as a child?) with the rottweiler. Many rotties are absolute babies as well, but perhaps this one was not.

21. Your fear is obviously quite understandable given your unfortunate
experiences. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I still will hope you'll someday spend some time with gentle dogs and puppies to see that there is a very different side of the "dog equation."

3. It depends on the dog
Some dogs are very people friendly and quiet. (I like those), It's the yippy, hyperactive, jump-all-over-you dogs I don't like.

4. I don't really like them either, in a general sense
though I certainly don't hate them. But I don't think I'd have one.

All slobbery, dirty, stinky things that bark and make noise and always trying to jump in my lap and lick my face.

But if I were in the country, would be nice to have a beagle or other hunting dog.

6. I'm not much of a dog person
I'm a total cat person, but my daughter has a pretty nasty cat allergy so everyone convinced me we should get a dog and we did. I'm nice to her, but there's not the kind of bond I used to have with my kitties.

8. I used to dislike dogs. Then...
...I met several who decided they loved me for no reason. Kinda cool, I can see the appeal.

Still not fond of the dog breath, though.

18. Weiners and Corgis ...

They're SOOOO funny.

The dachsunds are also better at digging out rats than cats are ;-) For mousing, I'd take a terrier over a cat ANY day.

26. Poodles worship me.
Apparently I'm a poodle goddess, and it's one breed I really dislike. Most dogs I'm quite okay with, although I currently have two cats because I prefer the extremely low maintenance of cats.

What I like about dogs is how they're so tuned into people and love us all so much. Except those damn poodles.
