Denturegate: Did Junior's teeth go AWOL?

This whole dental record thing got me thinking. I never could quite pin it down, but something about Chimpy's mouth has always bugged me. Have you ever noticed how it appears as a gaping hole, with very small, recessed teeth--if the teeth are even visible, at all? This morning, I compared the appearance of his mouth in early pictures and later pictures.

Chimpy's mouth used to have a more filled out look and his teeth were readily visible, when he smiled. Now, his upper lip hangs lower and it lies more flatly across teeth that appear to be further back in his mouth. It seems like these effects would be the natural result of toothless gums that have atrophied over the years.

Something happened to his upper teeth. Did he lose them due to poor dental hygiene or disease? Were they knocked out in a fight or an accident? See what you think (By the way, I have nothing against dentures. Some of my best friends have them :) I just want to know why/when/how the chimp lost his teeth):
