One of the greatest character actors.

The list is too long for me to post here.

See IMDB

I loved him in Dogma

Any takers?

So, maybe I was watching Die Hard and a Harry Potter movie on two different channels at the same time yesterday and the signals got crossed. It could happen!

And did you take part in this one?

He was the only redeeming thing about the Kevin Costner Robin Hood travesty.

4. I dunno, there were a few other good bits.
For instance, my favorate line from the movie... "Fuck me, he cleared it!" :P

And you gotta love Friar Tuck. "This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which the Lord intended a more divine means of consumption. Let us give praise to our maker and glory to his bounty by learning about... BEER."

5. I always thought Tuck said: "This is Christ, which any fool can eat", referring
to the bread and wine. But it's been years since I've seen the film. Probably won't again, since except for Alan Rickman, the whole film was just bone-stupid.

9. Any film is better for his presence - and I've seem almost all of them.
There's that whole set of British actors who cast off more skill in a syllable or glance than most actors give in a lifetime: Rickman, Maggie Smith, Emma Thompson, Judi Densch, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm.... they're amazing.

31. It's the entire package
The way he drawls and draws out his words pronouncing every letter. He had a jaw disability when he was a kid that causes him to speak the way he does. It's the look he gives before he delivers a line. I love the way he reponds to a line or situation by pausing for a second and then, with lightening speed, either races across the room to confront someone or just delivers a killer line.

33. He definelty is talented.
Have you read this?

Alan Rickman and Rachel Corrie

ALAN RICKMAN is about to become the latest Hollywood star to light the blue touchpaper on the powderkeg that is Arab-Israeli politics.

He is working on a play about Rachel Corrie, pictured right, the American "human shield" who was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer as she tried to prevent it destroying a Palestinian house in Rafah last March.

The play, My Name is Rachel Corrie, will open at the Royal Court next year, and is based on detailed diaries and letters written by Corrie before her death. It has been fully authorised by her family.

I read this announcement with no small amount of amusement, since it now gives me a new reason to dislike Alan Rickman.

Back in 1998 I covered the Jerusalem Film Festival for the JPost. Rickman was one of the festival's guests of honor that year, and showed up along with a film he had directed called The Winter Guest. (That film, BTW, is as tedious as watching paint dry without half the charm). I interviewed Rickman about the film (about which he had little interesting to say) and about his experiences in Hollywood in general.

At one point I asked him about how Hollywood has a hard time knowing what to do with European actors and tends to typecast guys like Rickman, Gary Oldman and Jeroen Krabbe (another guest of the festival that year) into generic bad guy roles.

In response, Rickman launched into a five minute tirade about the media and how it isn't Hollywood that typecasts, it's journalists. What he thought to get out of this tantrum is beyond me. Since then, whenever his name shows up in the credits of a film my immediate thought is, "Alan Rickman? That guy's an asshole."

I'm just glad he's the one wading into the Rachel Corrie swamp instead of some other actor I might actually like.
