CONFESS!!!!!! What's your spending vice
What do you spend waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too much money to support your spending vice?

Me: Makeup and Books.

It use to be Closing & Makeup, but when I gained all my weight, buying clothes became a sad chore. But now that I've lost almost 40lbs, I'm getting back into the great wardrobe I haven't worn in over 2 years.

But I love to buy makeup. I avoid malls like the plague because I can't help but go to the makeup counter and find some new whimsical shade of eyeshadow or lipstick (and they opened a M.A.C. store at the Christiana Mall). I love stopping at the outlet store in Lancaster where I usually find myself plopping down to buy 5-6 new things I don't need. If I quit buying makeup today I'd probably be fine not ever buying another thing the rest of my life except an occasional mascara. SERIOUSLY!!

My other passion is books. I have too many books to read and everytime another great progressive book comes out I have to buy it even though I'm about 10 books behind to getting around to read it. But damn if my bookshelf doesn't look impressive.

What's your spending vice - keep it LEGAL!!!

Live music and CDs. I've amassed quite a collection. (Easily 300 CDs.)

I used to have a golf equipment problem, but I've cut back severely. (The driver purchase of 2 weeks ago notwithstanding - at least it was on closeout.)

6. Buying clothes for my wife
She's a size 0 (zero) and there is a specialty store in the Eastern part of the state that used to be my sales district. I'd stop there about once a month and pick up something that she could wear to work. Sometimes it was just a top or a scarf but oftentimes it was a business suit.

sigh

can't do that anymore...............

Good food. Travel. Clothes (who else do you know that owns two tuxedos, one set of tails, and four dinner jackets - along with a dozen or so each of formal shirts, vests, ties, and pocket puffs - oh and four pairs of formal slippers? I won't even begin to get into suits and casual sportcoats.) Let's just say that two of our 5 bedrooms have been converted to closets to accomodate my clothes and my wife's clothes. Books, books, and more books - over 4,000 volumes at last count and rising - all but the last batch read at least once. Damn you Evelyn Woods! Several collections - hot sauces (one to try, one to display), unusual and rare distilled spirits (one to try, one to display - if I can afford a second), sporting firearms (mostly 20th century), religious icons form around the world, domestic wines, and anything else that's interesting.

27. chocolate and antiques....and books
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 11:33 AM by sybylla
Chocolate is tough to avoid because it is everywhere. Antiques are my special treat. On occasion I will visit an antique shop or an estate auction just to "bathe" in their atmosphere. And of course I end up leaving with one or two keepsakes of my trip.

Okay, I had to add books. I'm gradually filling my house up with them and there are so many I haven't had a chance to read. I am pretty weak when it comes to good books. Probably wouldn't be so bad about it if my local library was any good. Maybe some day I'll have to donate my books to them just so I can have my house back.

Same problem as you. Weight gain = sad chore when clothes shopping. My feet are still pretty though. :7 I probably buy 20 pairs of shoes and boots a year.

Then I have an electronics vice. :7

Another thing we have in common is cosmetics. If I were to pack my cosmetics and grooming products I would fill a whole box. I have about 30 bottle of nail polish that I rarely use.

For me it's sports games: ESPN College Hoops, Winning Eleven 7 Soccer, ESPN Football, NCAA Football 2004, and I'm looking forward to the new crop of baseball games on the horizon. MVP, ASB, ESPN, MLB... I'll probably end up with at least two of them.

Funny, I'm an absolute miser when it comes to everything else. I don't mind eating cheap food, wearing old-ass clothes, driving a shitty car, but when it comes to video games I'm a maniac.

46. DON'T SHOP @ HOME DEPOT!
100% of their political donations go to the Repugs.

I've switched to Lowe's, Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore for paint, and local garden centers for plants.

When I realized how much money I spent there last year, I thought I was going to lose my lunch (I repainted our entire house with Behr paint).

Seriously...avoid the Depot.

33. Books and meals out
Living alone, I find it uninspiring to cook for myself, so eating out more than I can really afford to is a real temptation, especially living in a major metropolitan area full of fascinating restaurants of every ethnicity.

As for books, well, they're such a common addiction at DU that I don't need to explain myself.

34. Dr. Martin shoes (any style) and coats and eye glasses
Coats? Sounds kind of silly, I know. I live in the midwest so jackets and coats are a necessity. Leather coats, suede coats, swanky coats (fuzzy collars and cuffs), etc. I have to wear glasses when I read and drive, so I have many different styles, kind of to fit my mood. Ranging from traditional, professional, to downright fun-kay!

I suspect make-up will make my list in the next couple of years. I am 36 and have always preferred "natural beauty" and have worn very little make-up (just the basics). As I continue to "age", I am sure that will soon start to change.

44. I can relate to you on that one!
With 4 boys we have enough toys to open our own "Toys R Us". This year for Christmas we said NO MORE! My husband is a musician so instead of spending a small fortune on toys that they already had or upgrades of something they already had, we made a huge investment and got all of the boys (except the baby) musical instruments. Our 7 year old got a set of really nice Sonar drums and our 6 year old got a mini bass and our 5 year old got a mini electric. It meant my husband and I couldn't do Christmas for each other but it was worth the investment. They finally have gifts that will last them a lifetime!

When I had more money, I used to spend it on clothes and shoes. When I get a better-paying job, I still don't think I'll spend as much money as I used to on clothes. Things go out of style so quickly, and I have all of the basics I need. I will probably just buy a couple of things each season.

But for now, I'm too broke to buy anything but books and magazines. No problem there!

54. books, books, books and movies on vhs/dvd
I'm trying to wean myself off of and quit my paperback book club, and then fulfill my dvd club membership and quit (I think I have to buy two more).

My husband and I were both readers all our lives, and each had a large collection before we ever met. We both worked in book manufacturing, and were allowed to take home damaged/waste books, so we have a huge collection now that we are together. There are a few duplicate titles we've culled out, but not that many really.

I just bought some software to convert my library database file to a more modern format, and I'll eventually get all our titles into the new database and know how many volumes we have.

63. care packages to Iraq
CDS, cashews, the best candy - it can add up to quite a bit of cash but I don't care because the packages get shared by the troops living in an impossible situation eating MREs for sustenance.

65. Books, clothes (trying to find un-boring colors for winter wear).
Antiques and collectibles, but I am running out of places to put them. Paintings, photographs, pottery and other dust catchers at local art fairs during the summer.

67. Anything electronic

If it's got lots of buttons and dials I'm all about it. If you throw in some really pretty flashy lights, then it's even better, and of course....Touch screens......need I say more....

68. Expensive bed linens and books
I have to stay out of stores that sell high-end sheets and blankets. It's an addiction, I tell you. Plus I've now made the bed so comfortable that neither my husband or I ever wants to get out of it.

Hmm. And that is a bad thing because .... ???

70. Definatelly books
I believe I still have every book I've ever owned and still want MORE!
I'm not the kind of person who reads a book and gets rid of it, I get attached to it and can't let it go. I'll read it again and again.
I even have a special bookshelf with my prizes: antique history books from the 19th century. I'm such a geek!

76. books & stuff for Mrs. V.
I'll bring her home the littlest thing -- a candy bar, a single flower, a post card w/ a cute photo on it -- if I think it'll make her smile.

And books. "If I have a little money, I buy books. And if I have any left over, I buy food and clothing." (Do I have that right?)
