A note to all motorists:
THE HIGHWAYS, FREEWAYS, SURFACE STREETS, LITTLE BACK ROADS, PARKING LOTS, THE SHORES OF THE POND WHERE YOUR KIDS THROW BREAD TO THE DUCKS, THE STREET YOU LIVE ON --

THESE ARE NOT YOUR GARBAGE CANS.

STOP THROWING YOUR TRASH OUT YOUR CAR WINDOWS.

2. Amen, sister!
Kepp a trash bag in your car. It's law in Washington State. Make it the law in your state.

3. Yep
Nothing like getting a nice bag of Mc Donalds trash thrown at you while riding your bike.

It is almost a karmically perfect moment.

4. I'm a smoker
and I want to add highways, roads, streets, parking lots, my front yard, anyone's front yard are not ashtrays. Dispose of your butts properly because not only are cigarette butts an eyesore they also can cause grass fires. Grass fires can lead to homes being destroyed.

I don't know how many grass fires I've seen started along the highways in Texas and Oklahoma by selfish, stupid, careless smokers.

I'll let my ashtray overflow in the car before I'll ever throw a butt out.

6. I've seen that happened
About 5 years ago I was driving home from my local mall in Bucks Co. PA. It was summer and we were having a horrible drought that year. This beautiful home that I pass on the way home had a nice size brush fire right along the side of the road.

Cause of the fire - some asswipe tossed his/her cigerette out of the window onto the dried out grass.

8. Well said!
Having been on the pillion of a motorcycle whose rider received a
burning cigarette butt in the face, it is not just dangerous in an
abstract, environmental hazard sort of way.

(Fortunately my friend was a good enough rider to cope with it but if
it had been an inexperienced kid, it would have been messy.)

Hey, I like having a butt. M.A.T.C.O.M. will like this idea even less than me.

22. It's a $1,000 ticket in Washington state
if you're caught tossing a lit cigarette out your car window. I kid you not; I just got that from a friend who's a Seattle PD officer. She said people flip out big-time when they get THAT ticket, but we've had way too many destructive wildfires start that way in eastern Washington.

People who dump the contents of their cars' ashtrays in public parking lots and streets should be required to lick the street clean. Gross!

I thought the signs said "$500 fine for throwing burning children from your car".

Actually, I don't drive a car. I walk two miles each way to work and have been seen (and screamed at) people casually chucking their shit out the windows. Of all the things that piss me off, this is one my top peeves. It's not that a little trash is such a big thing; it's the attitude that gets me. How someone can just be so extremely antisocial is flatly beyond me...and there's soooo damn many of them.

13. I lived on a major highway
in the country when I was growing up. It was a daily chore for one of us to go out and pick up the garbage off the front lawn. Some people are just slobs. I wonder if they throw their garbage on the floor when they go to visit friends.

10. I want them all dead!
Litterbugs are among the most annoying creatures on earth.

Just casually tossing the McDonald's bag out the window...

Leaving the New York Post on the subway, where it will soon be blown all over the car.

Tossing trash in the PARKING LOT!!! Too damn lazy to walk to the trash can.

(I have seen people go through the drive-up window at White Castle, sit in the parking lot eating the shit, then just drop the trash out the window.)

11. Stop paving the world
There are few things as desctructive to the environment (short of complete destruction) as running a concrete ribbon through an ecosystem. Its like a line of death to anything living in the area. Scarring and seperating the world. Enough already.

Oh and incidently tossing organic or biodegradable material in the trash merely sends it to a land fill where it will never go away.

15. Where would you prefer
the vast majority of people who are uneducated, ignorant of, or apathetic to alternative waste disposal methods, dispose of their garbage? Do you have an alternative for those millions?

Not everyone is enlightened enough to use a compost heap or to recycle as much as possible.

19. Funniest thing I ever saw
A very close friend of mine is a deputy sheriff in my county and I was doing a ride-along with him one day. He'd just finished writing a speeding ticket to a motorist when a Chrysler Le Baron barreled past and a McDonald's bag came flying out the window. My friend walked over, picked up the bag, and we took off in hot pursuit. After we caught up with the car and pulled it over, my friend calmly picked up the bag, walked over to the car, dumped the entire contents of the bag INSIDE the car, and said to the driver: "Litterbugs REALLY piss me off!"

That was it! No ticket, no formal warning, and no long lectures on the dangers of litter...but I GUARANTEE that the driver of that car thought twice the next time he got the urge to toss something out the window :)

23. One of my brothers once
walked up behind a (parked) car that'd just flipped a lit cigarette out the window, picked the butt up off the ground, and flipped it in the back window. He then calmly walked back to where he was parked, and watched. A few minutes later, smoke started rising from the backseat of the asshole's car. I'd never have the guts to do that myself, but, given the number of forest fires started that way, I found it appropriate.

24. Ok, I admit it
I do throw one thing and one thing only out of car windows.

Only in the country, never in town.

I usually toss my apple core out through the driver's side window to feed the critters. I try to get it all the way past the shoulder into the ditch.
